Hi guys. I went to the LaCrosse Tribune site, and I can’t find out if the river is shut down or not. Does anyone have the definitive answer. because, I can’t seem to find it.

The ramps might be closed but the river is not shut down.
    It might be “no wake”.

    But it’s still flowing South.

    She’s dropping fast.

Looks like under 10′ at Everts on Friday/Saturday which means we’ll be able to drive back to the campers and there will be “back forty” parking with the use of at least two of the up stream ramps.

With the dropping water there will be less debris, but as always on the river, be careful out there!

It would be cool to have some time lapse photos of the how fast the water came up and is receding.

That would be cool to see. I know there are a few cottonwood trees at Evert’s that could support a camera I remember seeing some in the past, but I do not remember where or when they were from…

I’ve been trying to teach Steve how to run the camera on his new phone. I think he’s still playing with Google Goggles.

    You’re so welcome.

It’s a new site the Corps came out with about a month or so ago.

What does “Out draft conditions at 45,000 cfs” mean??

Watch for the big red circle at the beginning of the lock walls. Those indicate an out draft as well.

What this means is, the river currents above the dam are strong enough to hit the lock wall or shore line an push the vessel away from the wall or toward the dam.

It’s a warning to tows that because of these currents their vessel maybe hard to control.

This is one of the reasons they extended the lock wall at #3 1000 feet and did major dredging above the dam last year.

If you’ve ever seen the tug Littl’ Charlie heading toward the lock, he’s on the way to push the tow sideways or against the wall to keep it from drifting towards the dam.

Maybe Damman or the others that work at the locks can explain it better, but that’s the just of it.

Lock and Dam 3 is a navigation dam and lock on the Mississippi River
approximately 6 miles upstream from Red Wing, Minnesota. The locks
position on a bend in the river makes downstream navigation difficult due
to an outdraft current that tends to sweep towboats and barges away
from the lock entrance and toward the gated part of the dam. This
outdraft current has resulted in 11 accidents since 1968.

In 2011, Edward Kraemer and Sons and Hoffman Construction were
contracted to repair and upgrade Lock and Dam 3. The navigation
improvements include an 862-foot long guide wall extension, dredging
and placement of 150,000 cubic yards of material and construction of a
closure dike to reduce the outdraft conditions near the guide wall. A
series of embankments, spillways and control structures were also
constructed and riprap erosion protection was placed along the
    river embankments.

The $70,950,000 project is scheduled to be completed in late 2012.
