Which motor to buy Evinrude Etech 60 or Yamaha 60

I am looking at repowering my boat. I have a 1987 50hp Johnosn and am looking at either the Yamaha or Evinrude 60 hp. One is 2 stroke and the Yamaha is a 4 stroke. The price and weight are about the same. I need all the help I can get in making the decision.

    Thanks in advance.

My vote is for the Yamaha, the e-tech will probably be faster, but the Yamaha will last forever.

ive been running yamaha motors for almost 10 years and never missed a day of fishing,4 strokes are fuel injected and very quiet, that would be my first choice.

The 60 Yamaha has the shifter up on the handle witch is nice, also has RPM manager on the handle so you can adjust your trolling speed by 50rpms a click. This is the motor I just ordered.

I have never had either motor but I could say I never see a post on here with people are having problems with their yammie. Definitely can’t say the same about etecs. I would go yammie without thinking.

I’ve been a die-hard yammy guy since early 90’s. If my life depended on one brand of engines, YAMAHA. Since OMC fell apart, seems as if its a crap shoot on getting a good or bad motor out of the E-tec line

Like a guide in Mexico told me, “Yamaha… no fix!”

He’s spot on I’ve had 10 tiller Yamaha’s, some for a year and some for many years. All of which have run flawless for me. The only other brand I’d consider for a tiller would be a Suzuki.

I own a 2011 50hp ETec and love it, from it’s self fogging to the 5 yr warranty, great motor.. Also AMERICAN MADE..

GOTO evinrude.com pick the motor you want and check out the info,,

This is a easy one. Yamaha no question and I have owned both.

Yammie all the way. Have had 3 since 1992 and all were bullet proof. Just turn the key and go fishing.

I replaced my 1989 Evinrude 60hp 2 stroke with a 60 Yamaha 4 stroke 3 years ago. Love the Yamaha handle and controls, great on fuel, trolls down great, super quiet, no exhaust fumes, not a speed demon – two guys loaded 16 ft boat 27mph. I don’t know about the E-tech, but love my new Yamaha.

Yamaha sells more 150 hp 4 strokes than E-tec sells of all of there motors combined.

Go to any boat ramp ask the first 10 Yamaha and first 10 E-tec owners if they would buy the same brand again for there next boat. With Yamaha you will most likely get a 100% yes response. The Etec owners will most likely be at 50-70% yes, and after you talk to them your decision will be a no brainer.

Etec has great TV commercials, Yamaha has great motors!

I had a 90 etec tiller for 2 years. Evinrude said no scheduled maintenance for 3 years or something like that. They didn’t mention not scheduled maintenance! My motor was in the shop more in one year than all the Mercury’s, Yamaha’s, and Suzuki’s I’ve ever owned. I had 3 lower units replaced the first season all covered under warranty. The motor would stop at wot for no reason and wouldn’t start for a half hour. That was an injector issue blamed on ethanol. Evinrude said it was a known issue but wouldn’t cover under warranty. I sold the boat and got a new one with a Suzuki and haven’t had one issue in 6 years and over 400 hours on the motor. Yamaha or Suzuki would be my recommendation.

Ok you convinced me, Yamaha it is. I talked to the dealer and it turns out I can get a better deal on the Yamaha.

    Thanks everyone.
