I just read in the local paper that the food bank near me accepts fish. They ask only that is freshly caught, cleaned, dated, frozen, and labeled what type of fish. They do need to see your fishing license when you drop it off. I’m dropping off 6 sauger tomorrow. I thought some of you guy,s might like to do it your self.

Considering the “real” cost of fish, it this really the best allocation of resources?

We can drop off Mercedes and gold too.

They will also take perfectly aged rib eyes and porterhouses, in fact, I can collect for them and take them in

So that posses a question, If you package and donate fish with your license number on the package, will that still count as fish in your possesion limit?

I would say yes it is still your possesion. The regs state your possesion is fish kept with you or else where. Think else where includes the food shelf.

with WATERFOWL that is NOT the case, you CAN gift game and have it go OUT of your possession.

as i asked my CO about the same with fish, he wasn’t sure it was the same and said he’d get back with me. Still waiting. i’ll give him a buzz.

OK, as far as WICONSIN regs, the metro CO says that they are OUT of your possession and off your count, if YOU do not control consumption of them.

hehehe of course, if you go back to the food shelf and pick up the fish, that’s another question…

You meat hogs are going to give to food shelves now, huh? King of a nice loophole.

Just like throw nets and multiple lines, I’d like to see them catch me with part of my limit in a food shelve.

I’m not sure MN FS’s will take fish unless you can prove you caught it without using lead sinkers.

I don’t plan on giving any fish away, I am thinking, that technicaly if someone ( IN MINNESOTA ) has a limit of fish with your name and license stamped on them, that they are still legally counted as part of your possesion limit.

A food shelf is a far fetched example, but it wil keep a person from stocking limits of fish in anothers freezer, such as a nieghbor, friend, relatics.

    Minnesota has that loophole covered.

Some one has to ask and I may regret this but why would you donate fish tot eh food shelf and then come back to get it? Where you just trying to stump the CO with that question today Stu? That poor guy might still have that question rolling around in his head right now.

    Sorry Pilgrim

I did not mean to offend you, and if I did I apologize.

It was just a question as it relates to donating fish.

I just remember a case that was in the newspaper several years ago about a fishing club in Elbow Lake MN ,that put on a fish fry for their local church all donations were well intended donations, however I believe the DNR brought charges against several club members for over possesion limits.

Hey man, any guy willing to clean fish and give them to a food shelf is ok in my book.

And yes, we can be JAs, what is your point?

I applaud you. I wouldn’t be giving away fish i’d cleaned. I might hire pug to clean them, but i’d not be doing it myself…

The point is not to avoid doing something nice for someone, but if you want to donate fish, give tuna or pollack that is $2-$3/lb max. If i needed a food shelf, i would rather get 10lbs of tuna vs 1lb of freshwater fish.

Also, those fish are stocked, studied, maintained and paid for by fisherman. Unless you are fishing waters that need to have fish removed, you are depleting a resource at the expense of another fisherman for the benefit of someone who doesnt pay for it and would benefit more from a different source of protien.

I believe in helping others, but i think it is important to make sure you are doing it in the most efficient manner. Think of it this way, if you have an incredible amount of wealth and want to donate cars, do you give porsches to 10 families or give 100 fords?

I highly doubt it is a problem or there is a danger of it becoming one. I really don’t think a whole lot of people are going to go spend time on the water, catch fish and clean them with the intent of donating them. If it makes a few people feel good to do it, so be it.

So can you use this as a write off?
    $100.00 in gas
    $15.00 bait
    .50 / mile
The list goes on and on….
