I went for a bike ride around Phalen with my daughter after work. We headed up past the lake and next to the stream leading up to Keller. On the way back I noticed three Asian teens netting the creek. I said “You know that’s illegal right?” They just gave me a dirty look and we kept going. Not gonna get anything with my six year old daughter along. We continued on our way home and were passing the new fishing pier on the west side and I noticed two Asian teens casting musky baits. I said “You know Musky doesn’t open until Saturday?”, the reply I got was, “Whatever man.”

This kind of garbage chaps me so we stopped and I made a call to T.I.P. Not sure what will come of it but at least I did what I could. Anytime I see anyone fishing or hunting illegally I call it in. I generally first tell them it’s illegal and once I had someone say they didn’t know and stopped what they were doing so I didn’t call. The other many times, I get a dirty look or they cuss me out. I know of several instances that my call has busted people because he CO will call me and let me know that they go fined or arrested. It might not be every time I call in but if it’s at least 25% of the time, it’s well worth it.

I do not waste my time with TIP. I make sure to have all the COs cell numbers programed into my cell and can call them directly. Be sure to give them as much detail as possible.

i go straight to the COs also.

i want to mention that it’s wise to not talk with them also. If what they are doing, fine, the co will just talk it up to a misunderstanding. the COs job is one of the most dangerous and any one of those people could have a bad reaction and come after you. I got my education the hard way and took a couple of pellets back in the mid 60s. Now i just fast dial the CO and remind him to wear his vest…

what kind of netting were they using? AFAIK dip nets are legal, cast/throw nets are not. What about seine nets?

also you sure they weren’t hucking big northern baits?

It was a throw net. The weren’t going for minnows cause they would have gone right though the hols in the net.

Mistakes are one thing. But I wouldn’t recommend breaking the law in front of me.

lord…I hope I don’t make a mistake in front of anyone! But it happens.

Just a few fishing nights ago I was out fishing with a friend. Normally there’s three people in the boat and we’re allowed 6 lines total. I have 4 rod holders and that’s generally enough to keep us busy. Once in a while I’ll have one person hold the fifth line.

Since we had for lines out, I brain tooted and asked if my partner wanted to hold a rod…which would have put my boat 1 line over the law.

I’m sure I turned red when he reminded me there was just us two in the boat and we’re only allow 4 lines.

Why is it so bad that someone is actually aware of what’s going on around them and want to make sure that our resources are protected by reporting possible illegal activity. The COs will sort it out.
You seem to just want to bash someone because of this. Rather shallow IMO! What’s the big deal? Are these your friends?

Being a steward of the land and good citizen is one thing, but having these guys on speed dial? Dunno, seems a little heavy handed or like you’re just out there looking for trouble.. smells like zimmerman

Mistakes are one thing. A mistake with seine net NOT designed for Minnows….. would be a pretty big mistake.

You have car insurance but don’t intend to use it correct? You repack your trailer bearings every spring don’t you? Having the COs numbers is no different. I am preparing for potential situation. Unfortunately I have seen enough illegal activity that I felt I needed to take that precaution. Perhaps you should get on those that made me take this step instead of getting on me for going the extra mile to make sure thieves get what is coming to them.

Personally I think it is sort of a responsibility for everyone to have TIP or CO numbers in their phone. We don’t have to have 911 plugged into our phone in case we see illegal activity, but that’s because it is easy to remember.

    COs can’t be everywhere.

Doesn’t TIP just call COs anyway when there is a report of activity? That was my assumption.

I do know that if you call TIP and actually get someone on the other end you should buy a lottery ticket cause you are lucky. That is why I call the CO directly. I know at least I can leave them a voice mail directly.

Every time I’ve called I’ve spoke with someone.

As far as labeling those that call TIP renegades or what not, that’s what it’s for. CO’s are spread thin. If I see illegal activity related to the outdoors I call TIP, they aren’t on speed dial just in my phone. If I see illegal activity not related to the outdoors I call the police. I would think that would be common sense for people.

Pointing fingers and chewing out those that turn criminals in is what’s wrong with society today. Heaven forbid the crooks take the blame, it’s my fault because I called it in. Using a net like I saw was NOT a mistake, it was intent.

Sand, Kudo’s for calling TIP. While you might get some off the wall digs, from the truly passive-aggressive. What you did was show a great lesson in citizenship to your daughter. Anglers and outdoors folk have always been stewards of our resources, more like you are needed.

Teens would have been good enuff! Feel sorry for your daughter growing up in an intolerant house.

Before you judge me on that you should know that my wife and I are both white and we have an adopted bi-racial daughter. So calling me out as being a racist is a plain load of crap. I would have and have in the past called TIP on any and all races. If it’s racist to call them what they are, Asian Teens, why is that the first thing the CO asks?

As a father of a beautiful bi-racial child the one thing I can’t stand is race talk. To the extend I find those that are that sensitive to it disgusting. My daughter is black or African American and Caucasian, I’m predominantly German. If you are Asian, you are Asian, if your Hispanic, you are Hispanic. Did you hear me call them the various names for Asians I’ve heard? NO, that would be racist. You were actually the one spewing all the disgusting words for races. Calling them Asian teens is not racist, it’s noting who they are for cripes sake!!

Can’t you point out posts where I ever attacked Asians? I have some very good friends that are Asian that fish with me all the time. I don’t believe I have anything against Asian people outside of the ones that break the laws, but then that’s any race.

Without know specifically which part of the asian community any of them are from, I think asian is as appropriate as afro-american.

I think calling these small groups of people out may not be all that wise given the way society is today. Never know who has a shooter inside his shirt and maybe having a bad day to boot. I have a couple direct numbers for co’s in my cell and won’t think twice about using them if needed. If I happen across someONE who appears to be outside of the law I might say something, but when there are numbers of them and I am a single….cell phone to the co time.

Rather then look at ethnic stereotyping, maybe the issue is teenagers who want to fish. I remember bringing home stringers of stinky tiny bulllheads to my Dad to clean. I doubt if I was ever prouder of myself and him when I handed those fish to him. I’d forgotten all about this until recently when he brought it up and finally admitted to the dread he felt that I would show up the next day with another stringer full. (he would wait till I was in bed and bury them in the garden – I thought they were somewhere in the freezer!)

We might see kids out fishing (of all persuasions) and many might be going about it wrong, but Kudo’s to them for going fishing and not sitting in the basement playing video games. These kids will likely be the one’s who carry on for us, then we finally have our fish poles pried from our cold dead hands. My sense is that fishing is an equal opportunity sport but so is being a knucklehead.
