I have a 2000 150 Optimax and have run Quicksilver oil from the day I bought it. Now I won a gallon of the Mercury synthetic blend oil for Optimax motors and was wondering if it is ok to mix those oils or stay away from that.

Check the Quicksilver jug. Should say it is specifically formulated for Optimax. It should also be a synthetic blend. If yes, ok to mix. Basically the same oil.

Do not believe the DFI oil was out when U got your motor

Its a 2000, runs great and you have always used the same oil. I wouldnt change that formula for anything. IMHO you would be asking for trouble.
May 20, 2012 at 3:43 pm #1069502Great motor and runs like a champ. I was wondering about the synthetic blend even being out when I bought the motor so might be best to stay away from the mixing. Yes I have been running the same oil since day one. Thanks for the info and thanks for the welcome.
May 20, 2012 at 3:56 pm #1069506Maybe worth a call to Mercury Customer Service:
(920) 929-5040I am ducking now to avoid the shots at MCS.
(I have had decent luck getting my questions answered by MCS.)May 20, 2012 at 7:34 pm #1069551If you are running petro oil and switch to a synthetic it is not recommended to switch back to potro oil. The viscus elements in the synthetic repel the Viscus elements in petro oil.
If you are running a syn blend currently it should be fine to mix it togther in low increments.
May 20, 2012 at 8:36 pm #1069558You can mix any type of TCW-3 oils.

I was talking about marine oils and the info your techs gave you regarding them is incorrect. I am Johnny’s age and retired. I have owned boats for over 40 yrs. I currently own 2 boats. 5 yrs ago I started a outboard repair shop. I am a certified Yamaha and Merc master tech. I fish 3 days a week and work on outboards 3 days a week. TCW-3 is a min spec created by the NMMA. It is similar to the API SM spec that has to be met by PCMO’s. Oils must meet the min spec. Good oils exceed the specs in both of these apps. Like all SM PCMO’s all TCW-3 oils are compatable with each other regardless of make or whether dino,semi-syn,or syn. Some direct injected engines such as Yam HPDI,Merc OPTI-MAX,and Evenrude E-TECH spec full syn oil but you also have the option of running semi-syn to save money. All of these will run on dino TCW-3 just fine if the specd oil is unavailable. This is even stated in the service manuals for these engines. Johnny will appreciate this. Yamalube is semi-syn,Merc Opti Oil, and BRP X-D 100 are full syn. Go to any boating and fishing forum and ask what oil people are using in their DFI motors. 9 out of 10 use Pennzoil full syn because it is less expensive and produces LESS carbon build-up. Didn’t mean to rant on here but I wanted to clarify this for you. Another myth is that if you mix 2 different brands of 2 stroke oil it will cause gelling in your oil tank. The guy that started that rumor should be slowly castrated with a piece of monofilament fishing line! end of quote.
May 20, 2012 at 9:32 pm #1069572Tom P: many fine points you hit on. Thanks for clearing, or should I say, “cleaning up the oil mess.” (you did better than BP cleaning up)
Thanks
