Creeping Charlie…..

Not talking about your neighbor. Looking for a good spray. I have tried all the weed be gone stuff and just put a small dent in it.

I got some trimec 899 and lv400 for heavier dosages. The trimec put a hurt on the dandelions but the creeping charlie looks mildly phased by it.

I have tried the lv400 yet.

Any other tips out there? I hate to spend more on weed killer.

Great question. Trimec hurts it but doesn’t seem to kill it. I have 1/2 gallon of Trimec left and am considering a ‘burn’ application. Looking forward to seeing what others are doing to control it.

It takes a few days of dry weather to make a dent in creeping charlie. Its no use spraying it on and it raining in a couple days. For best results and I’m not an expert but I won’t spray until (I have a good 5 days for the spray to work and I’ll hit it twice) in those 5 days to make sure the spray kills it and I mix it extra strong. I bought, forget what it was, at Wallmart and it worked, black bottle? The honey bees love it and I don’t, the neighbors got honey bees and thier all over it, if left unchecked it will take over everything.

Round up and then re-seed or re-sod this fall.

Thats about right too Stuart, its hard to kill the stuff sometimes.

I’ve heard that there is an oil of sometype thats mixed into the solution. I guess the oil holds the actual killing chemical to the plant longer so it doesn’t wash off and not work. Don’t know and just an idea but maybe mix a little babyoil with the solution, it would stay on the plant longer, who knows?

Should I consider re-sodding the area of my neighbor’s yard I’ll need to spray too?

It takes more than one dose to kill this stuff. I have had good luck spraying three times spaced two weeks apart. This is what our chemical salesman suggested and it seems to work. I have used a product called Speedzone (I don’t think it’s available anymore and expensive) and also trimec mixed with a product called mecomec. Another trick to help the chemical stay on the plant is to use a product they call a “sticker” that makes the chemical tacky and therefore stick better. It is cheap to buy, and some guys use a little dish soap as a substitute. Or you can do as mentioned above and kill it off and start over.

Absolutely not! That would be his responsibility!!

But if you have weeds it is because you’re lawn is not thick and healthy.Grass will crowd out weeds when maintained properly.

That’s besides the point. If my lawn won’t thrive after a fertilizer treatment and two lawn mowings per year how can I be held responsible for weeds?

Trimec will do it. Wait till fall. Spray it, wait a week, spray it again. It sites a great job, but it is more effective in the fall when the charlie is storing up for winter.

Man I hate the stuff more than dandelions and crab grass. I put a good dent in mine too, but enough survived and the next year it was like they were right back as full as ever.

I think if you are persistant you can push the stuff way back. I put a dent in it with multiple applications as stated before/ I heard the best time to apply is when they are flowering and in the fall.

2,4-D works gteat, will not hurt your lawn. You can find it at fleet farm or farm and fleet in the agriculture isle.

This is exactly right. Creeping Charlie can be killed and Trimec does it just fine. The key is to spray 3-4 times about 2 weeks apart.

Our entire back yard was almost solid creeping charlie when we moved in. It took a whole summer of applications, I’d say 6-7 of them to kill it all, but I find spraying a heck of a lot easier than laying sod.

The problem with creeping charlie is it grows in layers and the leaves above protect the leaves below from the spray, which make it tough to kill.

Watch what you by at fleet farm. The have it in two different strengths. The strongest is at 61% 2-4d and that’s what you want. Better yet go to a farm suppler (co-op) and buy straight 2-4d. Just be careful with what ever you get it will kill flowers just as well. 1 dose of 2-4d will kill any lawn weed you can dream of.

Triplet works real well on the old creepy charlie without killing every blade of grass. Be careful around lilacs and other flowers though.

Weed b gone (something) with diacamba in it works at my house. I had a hard time finding the right dose. I think I ended up about a double dose with a cheap 1 gal sprayer. Small plants wrinkle up or deform a little in a couple of days. If your mix is too weak it can be very frustrating.

Hopefully seeding some better grass will help my cause. I didn’t realize the grass was a weed too.

Fertolome weed free zone.First thing I have found to kill it.Tried everything else. Will work well in cool or hot weather. That said,it needs two applications.First dose will put it on the ropes.Second app will kill it.Then keep some handy if a little pops up later. They make a sticker additive that I mix with it to make it work better.Have also found in the long run if they don’t care, it’s best to treat your neighbors yard as well.My neighbors came under the privicy fence and took over a 20×20 stawberry patch I had to kill off to get rid of it.Have been told the crap can go under a sidewalk and come up on the other side.Just did 12 gallons of “organic gardening” yesterday.

We buy direct from a supplier. I am not sure if this is available without a license.

A good reminder I was told recently is be careful of using weed b gone or other chemicals with crabgrass preventer, especially if you are broadcast spraying it.

Crabgrass preventers of any kind prevent not only crabgrass, but all grasses. So if you’re trying to thicken a lawn by throwing down grass seed, you may not get the results you were hoping for because of the crabgrass preventer you’ve been using.

I think one key to success while battling Charlie(or any other weed) is to apply treatment immediately after mowing while the cut or “wound” is still open, allowing the chemical to penetrate quicker & more directly.

Fertolome weed free zone is the only weed killer I use now. Free zone will kill Creeping Charlie and all your other weeds. It works great.

Exactly… Did front yard for dandylions after it was cut and it hurt them bad. The back yard hadn’t been cut yet and it laid them down but still some popping up. Just “bailed” the back yard last night so looking at hitting it again.

I need BrianK to go through this thread and tally up the votes for each herbicide. I need to know what to try next.

The only one you need is 2-4d. Its been used on farms for ever and a day. 1 application and all broad leaf plants/weeds will be dead. Your grass will be find for it’s not a broad leaf.
