I’ve seen many posts of guys hunting and loving Morel hunting/Eating, etc.

I’ve. never looked for nor had them, so all I can say is they must be good if so many people go looking for them.

Then this appears in my local paper:

Morel of the Story, Chaska Herald
All I can say is WOW !, But like in fishing as some older fish are tougher and not as good as younger smaller ones, does the same hold true for MOREL’s?

Long-time Chaska businessman Randy Litfin, with American Family Insurance, found this trophy morel on Saturday, May 5. “It was over 11 inches tall. The crown was 5 inches wide and 7 inches tall. It is the biggest one I have found in hunting mushrooms for 50 years!” Litfin notes.

I’m not sure it makes a difference how big they are they all taste pretty darn good to me this is my first year looking for them but last night I found 2 almost identical to the one he’s holding. I knew they were big I just didn’t think they were that rare??

Yes, they’ve been running large this year for some reason. The largest I’ve ever found in 25 years of hunting is 6″, but one of my neighbors found a 9″ on his property. My experience was that they are NOT tuffer. Tuffness is related to how long they have been up.

This year seems to be an abnormal year for the big girls. In the past we always found the smaller ones but this year for some reason(conditions im guessing) has been perfect for finding the larger morels. From my expierence they dont taste any different other then you have more or a stem…that too tastes great but I personally like the texture of the top part of the mushroom…biggest so far for us has been two 9s and an 11inch monster! Happy Hunting!

I got some trophys yesterday I’m pretty proud of. Best eating we have ever had. I need to let them grow more often.

Found a whole pile of those huge freaks like the top one 7 years back or so in a friends 20′ ditch were he dumped his deer carcases. They weren’t as good as the normal ones but it was real cool finding them

OH MAN you really haven’t had them have you. Your in for one of best surprises of your live. My wife came from MT and has never tasted one until about 13 years ago and that was all it took.

Believe it or not in my early 20’s we found one that was folded over, if the top couple inches of it would have stood straight up it would have been an easy 10″ pushing 12″, the tallest I’ve ever seen, wasen’t the biggest around but the tallest. Jerry a friend of mine has a really good spot and every year gets some as big as pop cans.

For the newbees make sure you carry the shrooms in an open bag mesh onion or orange bags work great.
The reason being mushroom propagate by spores so as you walk around with the open bag you seed the coming years crops of goodness. you can seed new areas this way to. Chippman
