hello i have a 16′ lund with a 35hp johnson with a hydrofoil and a 10×13 prop, the boat is rated for up to 50hp. the boat will plane when its only me but usually have 1-3 more people in it with me and even with my tiny girlfriend it already starts to have problems getting up on plane, when i have 2-3 it never really planes out. the bow or front is always high and it seems like im going a lot slower and i mean alot. i dont know if its the motor angle or trim i think, i have it as close to the boat as possible (manual not motorized) or do i need a new prop or………. please help!!!! i only use this boat for fishing and want the speed and plane with 3 people that i get when im by my self.

What model and year boat and motor?

Might raise or lower the trim and try that.

Go down to a 11 pitch 3 blade that will help quite abit. Or even a 4 blade will help alot.

Its tough with no trim and weighted down like that. You likely need to raise the motor a tad. The lower the motor the higher the bow will rise, especially with 3 people in the back/middle.

so by raise the motor you mean move further from the boat or more room from transom to lower unit or prop closer to surface . sorry im a bit of a beginner at this and want to solve this ASAP cuz its lessening my time on the fish rather than on the way to the fish

Raise the motor up one notch on the transom if you are able to. It will do one of 2 things. It will either make you plow water, or it will make it plane up on top. If it makes you plow, then put it back down to where it was and switch props.

Are you sure you aren’t dropping a cylinder? Check spark on both cylinders. 2 strokes will idle good on one cylinder but have no top end performance. If that 16 is fairly bare bones, you should not really have a problem getting on a plane even with 2 people and gear.

I agree with Dfresh. while tehe motor is idling at the dock, pull the plug wires one at a time and make sure that both cylinders are firing before you get into manipulating the motor. it seems funny to me that it won’t plane.

I have a 16 Lund and 25 planes withn3 guys and gear. Same prop. I put a 1 inch piec of hardwood on transom and raised motor a bit also adjust trim. I agree motor might need some tuning.

well why do i go faster and plane when by myself?? and i had my boat mechanic check it out a couple month ago and was fine, i try to have him look at all my boats and he found that there was a factory defect and they put a restrictorplate that is only supposed to be on 20-30hp motors. he double checked the jet and numbers to make sure no one put wrong parts or bigger hp hood. so got the plate removed and everything seemed good until i took the family out and everything was in slow motion

Is this boat new to you? I ask to check if it was once performing better and suddenly stopped. The cylinder test is really easy, just pull the plug wires one at a time. Some people also reccomend using insulated pliers to do it so you don’t accidently shock yourself.

I have a 14′ boat with a ’79 Evinrude 35 on it, and carry two 6 gallon gas tanks, two batteries, gear, and it has wooden decks, and I get up on a plane and do between 25-30MPH depending on trim/load.

Sounds like weight distribution is you’re problem. Try moving some people around

I had a 16′ Lund Rebel, floor, pedestal seats & livewell. It had a 1989 Evinrude 30 hp with a 10 x 13 prop from a 25 hp. I believe that is the same motor as the older 35 hp, rated at the prop instead of the power head. That boat was heavier than an S-16. It did not matter what I did short of loading it with overnight camping gear and 3 guys, the boat was on plane. 2 guys with fishing gear it ran 26 mph. As stated above, your answer is not “tweeking” a thing or two. You are looking for a major problem like motor not running at full hp,short shaft motor on a long shaft boat, dragging a wind sock, propeller slipping on the shaft, propeller damaged, pinched fuel line etc. etc.

Seems simple enough, you’re under powered.

I think his motor just isn’t running right. I have a similar motor/boat and it’s more than enuf power.

Once you get your motor optimized, if you are still taking too long to get on plane, you can add planning tabs easily by glueing 2″ aluminum angle iron to the back of your boat. I did it to a 14′ sylvan and it was amazing. I used TOO much angle iron, i.e.12″ on each side. I’d suggest 6″ or 8″ per side. REally helped my boat.
