Any where to go, where would you go?

Hmmmmm…. that’s a tough one.
If the water was higher I’d opt for pool 2 or pool 4. But neither of those are true “opener” destinations since they never really close.
If I could go anywhere I’d likely do a canoe trip deep into the BWCA to a couple lakes a few friends have told me about where “mid-teeners” are still an outside possibility early in the season.
May 3, 2012 at 6:03 am #1065146Since your obviously not talking about catfish…
Third River Landing, on Winni.
Bigger fish can be taken, but relaxing with some eaters is high on the priority list there.
May 3, 2012 at 9:24 am #1065150pool 4 have never missed an opener but have never fished any where on opener that would be considered a true opener.

And your good to go on the opener IMHO

timmyPosts: 1960May 3, 2012 at 12:01 pm #1065167Anywhere?
Columbia River. White Sturgeon and 15 pound walleye for dessert.
May 3, 2012 at 12:56 pm #1065180Upper red lake is where I will be. The ice fishing there was really good last winter and the open water bite should be even better. The best part is I only have a 40 minute drive to get there
rwmcveanPosts: 95May 3, 2012 at 12:57 pm #1065181I’d go to the back seat of James Holsts’ boat and go wherever he wants to take me ; )
May 3, 2012 at 1:44 pm #1065205I would stick with Red. Been there every single year since walleye reopened and we always get lots of eyes. We eat em and we all take home a limit. Everytime. Guys looking for trophies wouldnt like it but guys that like catching upper teens fish like us love it.
May 3, 2012 at 1:57 pm #1065215URL, LOTW, WiNNI, LEECH, Any one of those would be great. probably hit pool 4 though on my own this year and hit the traditionals the following weeks.
May 3, 2012 at 2:12 pm #1065223Well, if it was strictly for the fishing, I can think of several places. If you want to include intangibles, I’ll go to the lake my sister and brother-in-law have a cabin on in Grand Rapids. It’s a good panfish lake, but there are plenty of other lakes to go to for the day within short driving distance. The cabin is in the Chippewa National Forest, so overall it would be a great trip.

I would second James on pool 2, 3 or 4. With the rain we have been getting lately conditions are setting up real nice for a fantastic bite on the river. Crowds on the river can be real lite on opener to.

I should factor in the rain we’re getting right now! Holy smokes is it coming down!
May 3, 2012 at 3:06 pm #1065251The smaller lakes of the Iron Range. Tank sized northerns all day and with the lakes (and landing) to yourself.
May 3, 2012 at 3:16 pm #1065256For a fishing experience, I would probably avoid any of the big name lakes. We will be fishing Mille Lacs again this year because it is a tradition with my Dad and brother. We don’t fish very hard and try to avoid the crowds. The trip I really look forward to is the next weekend when we go to Winnie. That shallow jig bite is incredible.
May 3, 2012 at 3:28 pm #1065264where do you go out of on winnie???? my wife and i will be out there. probably going out of highbanks or 3 birches landing.

Mille Lacs, nice and quiet
good one rick
Opening weekend for me is as much about the experience of spending time with friends and family as it is about the fishing. Since my friends and family are up by Mille Lacs that’s where I’ll be

We camp at the Deer Lake campground in Cutfoot and go from there everyday. We usually stick with the NE part of the lake, but if we need to we’ll go over to the West side. We’ve also trailered to some other lakes for panfish. I saw pictures of some 15-16″ perch caught very close to Winnie that I just may have to try and find while I’m up there.
