New Truck

Twelve years ago I bought my first NEW vehicle…a 2000 Dodge Dakota. I loved this truck. All the memories! Driving the “Bog Road” up to Baudette. Sleeping in the back. Walking out to the end of Shovel Point and seeing the Dakota two miles away in the parking lot. My Grandsons jumping around in the bed. Blasting through the snow in Northern St. Louis county deer hunting. Walking over the dike at the 494 access on Pool 2 and looking down and thinking how pretty she looked.

And then last week I get the bad news. That loud clicking noise was a death rattle. Rod bearings. Metal shavings in the oil. I felt like I was kicked in the guts. So what’s guy to do?

Well I figured the only thing to do was to buy a new truck and hopefully she’ll be as good as the last one. 2012 Dodge Ram, woo-hoo!

Not that many, only 80,000 but it was 12 years old. I blew a head gasket several years ago and I wonder if maybe I got antifreeze in the wrong spot and washed the oil away from a bearing or soemthing, and that lead to the engine failure. It was heart breaking. The Dakota looked pretty nice and it never saw 3000 mile without an oil change. Stuff happens.

I’m going on 72K with my 2002 Ram…knock on wood. Especially since I am not as religious with oil changes or any maintenance for that matter.

Dodge makes great trucks! Only reason I ever went to chevy is because on my 88, parts cost twice as much as my 82 chevy. The 318 is the best motor around ever. May not be a power house but you can beat the hell out of them and they keep right on going.

    Congrats on the new truck!!

I’m convinced all of our new vehicles have longevity engineered into them now. (trying to not be brand loyal here… )

When someone says they have 70k and are worrying about things… I laugh. 70k in a full size truck is its teenage years. Just wait til you crack 100k and roll over 150k and then maybe 200k.

My 99 GMC Sierra has 250,000k on it now. Engine still runs great, tranny has been replaced once. Most dependable thing I’ve ever owned and have no issue taking it on 800-1,000 mile round trip road trips.

I’ve owned it 10 years and have put 210,000 of those miles on it.

    Very nice!

I only have one concern….will an 8 foot fly rod fit in those “beverage coolers”?

The “Beverage Coolers” are about 5 feet long so yes a two-piece rod would fit in there nicely. I was thinking that would be a great place to put wet muddy waders too. Pug wasn’t kidding; those boxes are plastic and have drain plugs you can pull out so you could load them up with ice and the beverage of your choice. I wonder if I could use them as bait wells? Bullhead boxes!

I owned a Dodge once. It made me a GM forever guy. 12 years in Minnesota? Garage kept except for July? New toys are nice though….

I think what BK was saying is don’t get caught driving down the road with the plug in. Especially with the dreaded lake water clinging to your waders.

    Congrats Rootski!

I owned a couple GM products (Sierra and Calais)…never again… We don’t want you in the elite group anyway

I got to looking @ dakotas after reading this post, and I guess this is the last year they are making them? As popular as they are that just doesn’t make any since to me.
