We fish the Mississippi river between WI n MN . We fish under WI license. If we are on the Minnesota side of Mississippi do we fish under MN rules or WI rules because thats what license we have? Yes I am talking between the tracks.

I believe.. its Wi laws since you are a Wi resident and hold a Wi license.

what I’m reading as we follow the rules of the side of the channel we are on according to that state not your license. I always thought it was your license there for 3 poles on the whole mississippi

If you think of it like your drivers license you will be ok.

Which ever drivers license I’m holding allows me to drive in both states, but it doesn’t allow me to drive over the speed limit in either.

If the speed limit is 70 mph in WI and I cross the bridge into MN, and it’s 65…I can’t drive 70.

Good way to get a ticket!

Always follow the regulations for the side you are fishing. As soon as you cross into MN water with 3 rods you can get a ticket.

Same goes for limits, if you catch a limit of minnesota walleye you are done. Those walleye count towards possession from minnesota so you can only have one limit in your freezer.

Rules dont have anything to do with where you live or what state your license is in, it depends solely on where you are fishing.. and on the MN side, you are fishing MN so you must follow MN laws.

BK’s way of putting it is spot on.. just because you have a texas drivers license and can go 80 on the interstates down there, doesnt mean you can go 80 everywhere.

This also applies to culling rules. Even if your in a WI permitted tournament (a new law allows culling), it would still be no cull on the MN half of the river.

There are also border water only rules that allow us MN folks to use 2 lines on MN/WI border waters. Just to clarify for someone reading this thread and wondering about that particular question. See page 64 in the 2012 reg book.

Just FYI. The new WI culling law pertains to Bass tournaments only. Tight lines everyone!
