Its getting close to the time where myself and a couple other friends of mine set out our dittypoles for catfish. I planned on taking a few pictures of what really good catfishing is like on our local river, the Cedar river. When setting the first poles you get a few and as the water warms up the females go on a feeding binge for about three weeks and they hit anything that moves because thier so hungry. We catch alot of them and this is the time of year some of us stock our freezers with our limits and give some to the older folks we know that can’t make it out fishing, basically because they can barely walk to the mailbox and back. I would like to post some pictures of the nice catches we get and maybe the cleaning table for some folks to see what really good catfishing is like because they might not have it as good where they live. I know some don’t mind seeing them because none of them are going to waist or are we catching over our limits. I’m just wondering if anyone would object to seeing some of those pictures and take offense to what a really good catch is like. Please note; that if theres a few that don’t want to see them or think theres something wrong I’ll be polite and I won’t post them for others to enjoy. Please post responses here,,,thanks and good catfishing to the guys who fish catfish.

I’m confused by this post. This is a fishing site. People come here to see pictures of caught fish and to get fishing reports. This is not PETA.

    FF,

There are people on this site that so believe in only C&R fishing that they negatively comment on any pics of kept fish.

My take is that you can never please all the people all the time, so post away. Especially with the info above on how they are used.

As long as what you are doing is not illegal… than there is no problem with it. Nothing wrong with catching “over your limit”… as long as you transfer the fish while still being legal. That also includes the fact the people that are “receiving” limits of fish also are legally able to receive them.

That being said… Old people love fish (just ask my wife… ). I personally don’t have issues with giving those less-able catches for their personal enjoyment. Before my Grandfather passed… ANY deer we took had at least a few steaks going his way.

Seems some guide (?) got ripped for posting to many pictures, not so sure there’s not a few peta infiltrators here, but in my opinion, post away…worst they can do is rip into you too.

Everything we do is legal and we make sure it is. We give fish away so we can keep fishing and stay legal, giving them to older people is one way to do it. I just wanted peoples opinions.

By the way, the DNR here raised the daily limit to 15 and possession to 30. It used to be 12 I think a few years back so now the 3 of us can legally catch 45 a day and possess 90 legally. If I’m right it looks like the catfish populations have gone up.

    x2!

I’ve never fished for cats, but when I was in the service I went home with a friend to Alabama. His mom made fresh catfish for supper, it was great. Please post some recipies for cats and you might make a convert out of me as well.

Heres my favorite recepie bck, After I fillet them we pat dry on a towel. Then dip in an egg and milk solution, more egg then milk and then hand roll into 1/2 yellow cornmeal and half flour. The oil must be as hot as you can almost get it, around 450 too 500 degrees. Don’t drop the fillet in, slowly let it down into the hot oil so you don’t get burned by a splash.

For tartar sauce I use chive and onion chip dip and add miracle whip with sweet pickle relish and coarsely chopped onions. I love onions and the taste of them so thats why I coarsely chop them then add to the mix and pile it on the hot fillet. When I break open the fillet the juice runs out because the hot oil has sealed the coating and kept the juices and flavor inside, its very good fish. Shorelunch is good too but I just use the yellow cornmeal and flour mix.

No diffrence. I sometimes peel the skin and sometimes I just fillet the skin off. I cut around the body behind the gillplates then down the backbone on both sides and leave a little flesh attached to the tail section. I cut over the ribs and then cut from the gillplates down to the tail on the bottom of the fish. Flip the fillet over and then just seperate the flesh from the skin. I wash the blood off immediately and then soak in a bucket of saltwater to cut the blood and oil. The fillets come out almost snow white and are firm and fresh. Some guys peel the skin and steak them out at about an inch thick and fry them with the bones still in them, thier good that way too.

Instead of pictures I might go for a “in person eyewitness verification”

I like to fish for cats but don’t actually target them all that much anymore, only once in a great while. Good eats, I’ve been known to share quite a few of the fish I catch (all species).

Pictures are fine in my book, post away.

Good God, just post them. If people complain, then let them complain. This was the most unnecessary thread ever.

Just make sure to also take photos of the fish fry you have for the Iraq war vets.

Pug this was not intended for you and would a picture of an old WW 2 vet that was a gunner on a bomber to liberate france and Italy do for a picture. Do you really think I posted this because I really care what those people think, not really and I could care less. I got alot of slack from a few on here showing some catfish catches a couple years ago and because of that I wanted to bring attention to thier nonsense befor I do it again. We’ll see what happens when I post them this spring, and my for warning to them is this is a fishing site, not a select a few and eat them bambi site and save your comments to yourselves. They have no idea what its like where I live and fish, you’ve even got some commenting negatively on a truck bed with a load of crappies laying on it caught in another state, give me a break… I could care less what they think fishing is to them, so I don’t want them commenting on what my friends and I catch. I held off last year by posting the ones we got, and we killed them again, this year I’m going to have fun posting and giveing advice to the ones who ask for it and to show people what an excellent catfish factory we have here… some enjoy seeing an excellent catch and were they can go to do the same, some don’t, some even want to vacation here so they can do the same, oh well! Our catfish here in Iowa in my area are there to catch and eat, atleast the DNR thinks so by thier netting surveys and they, the DNR encourage others to do the same, and from experience so do my friends, myself and others and we’ll help anyone and give them the right advice and help if and when they ask freely. I can’t believe theres some people so twinkied that they think others have to do it the same way as they do it in thier area.
