Ordered from DNR website on Tuesday and it arrived in my mailbox Wednesday. Just so everyone is aware by not having this sticker on ANY watercraft (including seaplanes and duckboats) you could be charged with up to a gross misdemeanor by 8-1-2014.

It’s a pretty useless sticker in my opinion and when affixed it must be readable and able to be seen when asked by an officer.

Seeing as whining and complaining on a fun and friendly fishing forum will have zero affect as to what silly laws the lawmakers pass I figured I may as well comply, that is unless someone is planning to go to the capitol and rally angainst this ????

With all the talk about AIS sticker how is Minnesota going to handle tow and barge companys. If a barge is leaking I have seen them pumping water from the barge. Or maybe a free pass for them!

For me to inter Minnesota with my boat I have to decontaminated it to enter any one of the lakes. What steps do I have to take to decontaminated it? Is there a site that I can go to and read for information. Thank’s

I am a little confused about all the talk going on about placing the sticker on your boat. I picked up the sticker at the Boat show this spring and the directions state that it needs to be placed on the BOAT TRAILER, nearest to the whinch.
Is there another sticker that needs to be on the boat?

I asked a CO at the Sport Show about wet nets being bought into MN for use on various lakes. All I got was a cold stare and a great look at his back walking away. I suspect you’ll pretty much get the same response about the barges.

From what I understand, you need to remove all plant remnants, wash the boat, trailer and livewell with hot water before you can even enter the state with your boat. How hot should the water be? Another good question. Also, regardless if you’re putting your boat in or not, it has to be clean to even pull it on the highways jerr

Jeff, there should have been 2 stickers. 1 smaller one that goes near the crank handle and another larger sticker (that’s useless) that goes in the boat in an undetermined location but must be able to be shown to an officer upon request.

Good questions about the barges and the nets. I like that people are asking officers these questions and they don’t know how to answer them. It seems there is a lot of money being spent on this campaign. Now the real question is : is all this money and effort really going to make any difference ?

Are these stickers offered in multiple languages or is this yet another regulation our non-English speaking (and reading)friends get a pass?

    I agree Jesse.

Just for those that are interested. “affixing” the sticker is open to interpretation. According to the directions on the sticker it can be laminated and zip tied to the boat vs. being stuck to the boat.

This is the route i will go. I like this option better than sticking it on the boat.

On a plus side with this AIS deal, my last outing was at very slow landing. I had the time to give my trailer a complete inspection. What I discovered didn’t make me too happy. First, the bunk carpeting was full of sand, creating a sandpaper effect on the bottom of the boat. Second, the tops of the bunks were full of moss. I used my hot water pressure washer before I left home but it only got the sides of the bunks clean. A stiff scrub brush was the only way to get the imbedded moss out of the carpet. This winter I’m going to be changing out the carpeted bunks for a product I found at the Sports Show this spring. Hopefull it’ll take care of this problem. It’s not going to be cheap, but I think the benefits to the bottom of the boat are worth it, and the AIS, well, that’s just the world we live in, what ya gonna do? jerr

The point of the sticker is to make sure everyone has knowledge of and read the rules. You would not believe how many people have no understanding of the pull the plug, drain livewells and buckets rules. This is an attempt to at least make everyone be aware.

There is new legislation in pending Bills that may or may not be passed this session that takes the sticker one step farther. It creates a competency based test you would need to pass. Just like a drivers license test.

Sec. 7. [86B.13] AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES PREVENTION PROGRAM.
4.2 Subdivision 1. Establishment. The commissioner shall establish a statewide course
4.3in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. The commissioner must develop an
4.4educational course and testing program that address identification of aquatic invasive
4.5species and best practices to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species when moving
4.6water-related equipment, as defined under section 84D.01, subdivision 18a.
4.7 Subd. 2. Aquatic invasive species trailer decal. The commissioner shall issue an
4.8aquatic invasive species trailer decal to a person that satisfactorily completes the required
    4.9course of instruction.
4.10 Subd. 3. Contracting for services. The commissioner may contract for services
4.11with the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities to
4.12provide training and testing services under this section.

4.13 Sec. 8. [86B.135] AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES TRAILER DECAL
    4.14REQUIRED.
4.15(a) A person may not transport watercraft or water-related equipment, as defined
4.16under section 84D.01, subdivision 18a, with a trailer unless the person has an aquatic
4.17invasive species trailer decal issued under section 86B.13.
4.18(b) Aquatic invasive species trailer decals are valid for three years.
    4.19EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective July 1, 2015.

4.20 Sec. 9. Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 86B.401, is amended by adding a subdivision
    4.21to read:
4.22 Subd. 14. E-mail address. The commissioner shall provide an option for
4.23individuals licensing a watercraft to provide their e-mail addresses to be used for notifying
4.24individuals of watercraft and aquatic invasive species regulations and to invite individuals
4.25to sign up for e-mail lists and social media efforts of the department to assist in public
4.26outreach and involvement. An e-mail address provided by an individual under this section
4.27is private data, as defined in section 13.02, subdivision 12.

This reminds me of something else… with all the forest fires lately, maybe they can come up with a sticker to put on all the trees in the forest, warning of campfires and how they can start forest fires…. then the hummingbird wouldn’t have to fight them by himself

I had a scrap of lexan in the garage left from making the “license” plate for the ATV (another stupid MN idea) and put the AIS sticker on it. Threw it in the boat and it joined the other stuff that lays on the floor by my feet.

FYI Unless you have an antique boat, the sticker on a board might not fly. But of course it will give you an opportunity to argue at length with CO’s, AIs Watercraft inspectors or folks on this board (LOL).

The criteria wasn’t solely “antique” boats

It was “antique or unique” boats

my boat is certainly unique due merely to the fact that it is the ONLY boat in the ENTIRE WORLD which … readdddy? … waaaait forrr iiiit …. which I happen to own

The top portion of the sticker is what needs to be attached to the boat somewhere. I have opted for the inside of my livewell lid, out of sight out of mind. it can be placed anywhere in or on the boat so that it is visible for a CO on command. The lower portion of the sticker that says remember your drain plug legally does not need to be affixed to your trailer winch, it is (recommended) as a friendly reminder. As far as temperature goes for decontaminating your boat it is 140F for 10 seconds to kill any aquatic veg that is stuck between the hull and the trailer. In your bilge area to kill anything in there it is 120F, this is because some bilge pump manufacturers cannot handle water hotter than 130F. hope this helps.

Since we are talking alot about stickers, anyone know of a good glue/adhesive to restick my 2013 registeration sticker? Looking for something that will hold and not screw up my boat.

    Thanks

    Very simple.

    1. You can put sticker ANYWHERE in your boat.
    2. NOT REQUIRED until 8-1-14

    Q. Where does the decal need to be attached on the watercraft?
    A. The decal must be attached to the watercraft, but state law does not specify where it needs to be attached. It does not need to be in view of the operator as with the personal watercraft decal. It does not need to be placed near the watercraft registration decals and is not recommended to be in that area of the boat. It is recommended to display it where it can be read and can be shown to an officer upon request.

If the owner does not want to stick the decal on the boat because it is an antique wooden boat or other unique boat, they may attach the decal to an object or laminate it and attach it like a luggage tag.

    Q. Is there a penalty if I launch a boat without one?
    A. Currently, there is no penalty in effect, but a warning can be issued. Now that the decals are available, it is expected that boaters will be obtaining the new decals and conservation officers will be providing the decals to boaters who have not obtained one. After August 1, 2014, it will be a petty misdemeanor for boaters who don’t display the decal on their watercraft.

happy to hear that my drain plug legally doesn’t need to be attached to my trailer winch

but now I’m really confused … why do I need a sticker to help me remember that ? ?

Since our gov’t is now in the business of micro-managing its citizens, I would much rather see bumber stickers on cars that prove the driver understands the basics of merging off and on major highways.
