How many of you raise chickens? What kind? I have about 30 of differant breeds.

You have any Polish chickens? Do you ever mess with their (all chickens) heads to show how stupid they are?

April 24, 2012 at 4:25 pm #1061992We grew up raising chickens in Springfield, MN. Mom used to get about 500-800 each year. Some, we would raise to lay eggs, when eggs got up to 50 cents a dozen, we bought our first TV! The rest would be butchered & delivered to people in the neighborhood or town. Nothing makes a kid happier than getting up at 5 AM to pick the feathers off of 50-100 chickens, and then cleaning out the gizzards for a feast! Now, my daughter Heidi & her family have started raisning some for eggs—-only about 25. Their first efforts after Easter resulted in 45 dead chicks. They are getting some new ones again soon. I’m not sure which ones they are getting. We always liked the ones that laid brown eggs.

Used to hate eating the stuff, now I can’t wait to get home for one of Roger and Carolyn’s home cooked fried chicken meals. I remember the days prior to track meets having to pick a few chickens to pay for my sins the night before. Funny, the nights I was home on time, my parent’s let me go right to the bus for track meets.
I have no idea what kind we buy anymore, but they taste good. Dad is setup for pheasants, so chickens aren’t hard at all comparatively.
April 24, 2012 at 4:55 pm #1062002We raised chickens when I was in high school. We’d get maybe 250 each spring, raise them through the summer and then butcher in the fall. We used them to fill our freezers for winter and also sold many to neighbors for like $5 each.
They were a pain to have around, always getting out, pooping everywhere. We also would get about 50 domestic geese each year too. Complete pains in the .We’d take one Saturday in the fall, setup a big butchering process and get it all done in a day. That was always fun as it involved 9 of us. 3 grandparents, and the six of us in our family.

April 24, 2012 at 5:23 pm #1062017We used to take home the school science chickens. The neighbors always complained about the chicken crowing in the morning. Then they complained how we butchered all the chickens in the fall to shut them up.

April 24, 2012 at 5:44 pm #1062031I worked for an Uncle & Aunt during High School (35 years ago) summers, helping on their Hog & Egg farm.
They had 10,000 laying hens and approx. 150 Sows with a few Boars and another 200-500 feeder hogs depending on the time of year.
Always got a good HIGH cleaning the Chicken House with all the fumes released when we cleaned it. Maybe a reason for my state of mind now

My dad would say I dont eat anything that eats with its Pecker.
April 24, 2012 at 11:49 pm #1062179Toughest thing that can happen to an old SD farm kid is take away his pan fried chicken. My caring/sharing bride has deemed fried chicken to be unhealthy for me. I’ve learned to cook it myself so along with fried fish on my solo camping trips I fry up a golden pan fried young rooster or two. jerr
