Buying a 998 from a fellow IDOer and wondering which mounts you guys are using/recommend. Fleet Farm has the B-111. Seems more universal. Will this work? Or do I need a different one? The ones reccomended by RAM seem to be custom fit and are $100+ dollars, are they necessary? I think FF has others, this was just info over the phone.

    Thanks,

    Paul

If you plan on hitting waves a high speed go with the big ball! Lenght of the arm will be dependant on your needs…

I wouldn’t go with less then a 1.5 inch ball. If you whack a big wave, the weight of this unit and some torque, it can really really bounce around.

Dont short yourself on the mount when you get the nice unit. I would suggest the 2.25inch ram ball mount if that is the style that you like. Otherwise they make a straight shaft style that has less room for wiggle or error. If this is the style you like the both ram and stabil make this model.

Whatever you do just make sure you are confident when you are crashing waves. I just put a 2.25inch ram ball mount on my new hds10 and it works great for now. We’ll see how it stands up.

I have my 958 on a standard ram mount, and it works great. I have it on the bow and regularly trailer the boat with the screen in place. I crank it very tight, but I haven’t had an issue with it moving in the year+ that I’ve owned it. If you want to be sure it won’t move, though, go with the big ball mount and it will be rock-solid.

    I looked at the Ram
    (http://www.ram-mount.com/nationalproducts/ShoppingCart/tabid/68/Default.aspx)
that you spoke of; I also looked into the Stabil adjustable mount. The Ram was God awful huge! Even though it offered more adjustability over the Stabil Mount I was not overly impressed. For the less adjustable mount versus the huge adjustable mount by Ram, I went with the Stabil adjustable. At this point in my viewing, I’m not disappointed with my decision!

I’m putting it at the console and its going behind a full windshield. Are the stabils able to turn around so I can see it from the bow seat?

There’s only one ram mount for the larger units and it’s the Stabil-mount. I wasted $$ on the big ball and it couldn’t handel it. Installed the Stabil-Mount and I never have to remove my 1197 even when I drive 6 hours. You’ll tear your console off before this mount gives way. I did find a home for that big balled ram, it’s supporting my new Minn Kota 101

It will allow you to swivel it, but you will likely not be able to do what you are thinking of w/ the Stabil.
Here is a link for the web site.

I used the “Adjustable Electronics Mount” both for the 1198 at the dash and the 998 on the bow. On the bow I can rotate it side to side as I have it mounted vertically. The mount becomes stationary at the attachment in the base when you install it. Swivel is within the center shaft and with the ā€œUā€ bracket that came with your unit.

    Clear as mud?
