This years tax refund is going back into our house. We need to update the flooring. Years of kids and dogs have taken the flooring to the brink. When the house was built, 17 years ago, they put in a ton of carpet. It is a split level. We’d like to: 1. Do something with the carpeted steps. 2. Switch part of the lower level to some sort of laminate or vinyl (I like the Andura vinyl tile). 3. Recarpet the living room and master bed. 4. New flooring in kitchen and Bathrooms.

Any input on current and proven materials. Do you know of anyone in the LaCrosse, WI area that you’d recommend?

And, BTW, I’m going to do some “serious thinking” about it on the water this evening.

I am a flooring inspector for the carpet mills. In carpet it is important to know the fiber the carpet is made from. Avoid olefin or polyester fiber. Dupont stainmaster is the best nylon, but any nylon is better than the wrong fiber.

For the vinyl I have some Konecto products and they are great and you can lay it yourself.

We have a story and a half and we did away with all the carpet on the main level and redid all the wood floors in all rooms but the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen is vinyl and the bath was redone a couple of years ago in tile. The last room on the main level that needs to be remodeled is the kitchen, we are going to gut it and start over and I think we will go with tile there as well. As for the wood floors I love them and would never go back to carpet, you will pay more but well worth it IMHO.

I’ll 2nd the Konecto products. I’ve installed a couple of the vinyl plank floors. Easy to do and they look great. They also have one now that looks like tile.

Well I went through the same thing, wanted to replace carpet in my front room and my stair leading downstairs. I was on a budget and I tried to get some independent floor contractors to come in. When I finally found a guy to look at it. He spent a half an hour measuring the job and BS’n with me. Never called me back never returned my calls. That was the time I decided to take matters into my own hands. This is the result. Other than grouting the stairs the job is done.

i put down the laminate wood flooring in my exes house and was very simple. Was kind dissapointed i didnt need more tools. anyway, i would go that route again. Cheap, durable, and looks realy good as long as you stay away from the darker colors. they look off

Bigpike, is that wood at the edge of the stairs or a tile corner piece?

Tile corner piece I was looknig at was $40 a stair x 13. Ouch! I bought a 2 chunks of quality oak from menards for $50 each and had a friend with wood working equipment and we made them. Cost me a 12er of good beer, 6 of which I drank after we finished , Stained and varnished total cost for all the bullnose = $125. Just grouted today and man it looks nice!
