Anyone use a special turkey gun for taking gobblers – thinking of going shopping and have no inclinations. I am not a fan of my Benelli. Too Heavy.

We do alot of spot and stalk vs. sitting.

    Input appreciated –

If the opener bill passes, does that wipe out a mandatory 7 day waiting period for purchasing a gun?

I bought a Remington Magnum 870 turkey gun at Fleet Farm a couple of years ago. Shot one with it last year.

In Minneapolis, you can get the gun ASAP – as long as your life is in danger…

I have 2 “dedicated” turkey guns. One is a Winchester 1300 fully camo, xf, rifle sights, scope, blah, blah, and the other is a Knight TK2000. Both are fairly light. Wish the Knight was heavier because it patterns best with 120gr ffg power. It will rock you.

I currently use neigher of these guns…I currently use a black syn Escort 12ga. with a standard full choke. I guess I’m back to simplicity. Get ’em inside 30 yards, bead on melon, BAM!…game over.

What benelli do you have? You could probably get synthetic stocks if yours are wood, and a short barrel for less than the cost of a new gun. That would significantly reduce weight. 22-26″ barrels for turkey.

Oh…Here’s some proof that the escort works. I have to brag a little on my buddy. He is 10yo and after 2 unsuccessful years and 4 missed opportunities, it all come together for him yesterday morning. I was beginning to wonder if it ever would. His 1st turkey killed during Iowa’s youth season….

    AWESOME!!!!!

Love the look of success in a young person –

You should be commended for taking a young person out –

I agree with “getting close”. That is the only way we take ’em

I’ve got an old Rem 870 that I modified specifically for turkey. Scope mount, scope, custom stock and forearm, sling, and fine tuned choke/shell combo. The longest shot we’ve taken and killed a bird is 65 yards (range finder confirmed).

It’s a turkey killing machine. However it probably won’t fit your “not to heavy” criteria. You can see the shotgun in these pics.

The jake may be ugly but we worked HARD for 3 days to fill that tag. I was more proud to harvest him than any other bird I’ve taken.

i’ve hunted turkeys since ’72 and closer is easier. But of late I’ve gotten more interested in longer shots. I switched to 18g/cc #9 shot and i don’t worry too much about distance anymore. I like the remington XF turkey choke. with the 18g shot, most of my shells are around 2-1/4″ so having a magnum heavy gun is an artifact of the past. 1-1/2oz loads are the most i shoot anymore. The last two i took were at 72 and 77 yards.

i used to use the long shells as #2 & #3, but now i take the birds at 50 yards if it’s a nice beard.

we call the shot ‘cop killa’ and the guys in the carolinas are using it for coyotes out to 50 yards.

I bought a browning maxus last fall and killed many ducks. It’s a great gun and hopefully can tell you how it works on turkeys on wednesday.

i use a cynergy over under with jellyhead .670 chokes and 3.5 hevi shot 6’s. shot the hevi 7’s and their just mean 289 pellets in a 10″ circle at 40yds with a fresh deep cleaned barrel . and benelli SBE with a jellyhead .660 with simular results 3.5 hevi. if you go with browning or mossberg use a .670 or .680 choke restriction. because of the bore is bigger on them. benelli or remington use .665 to .660. deep clean all barrels for best pattern. and if its not a chrome lined barrel you can pollish the barrel so it looks like a mirror and she will shoot great. your patterns will be more even and denser. mossberg for the money shoot great.

But that doesn’t make my feeble attempt at a joke funny.

I think we all would be happier if you were in the Carolinas, but I don’t think those good folks have done anything to deserve you.

The Benelli Super Vinci weighs 6.9lbs. Not sure if you can find a lighter 3.5 auto, but it’s pricey!

I’m with Btom, I use a Knight TK2000 black powder shotgun. It patterns well and with only one shot, you make it count. Of course the first time I used it, I lugged it around all day only to realize that one needs to put the powder in, for it to go Boom.

Winchester Super X3, 3 1/2’s, stock full choke tube. I shoot Winchester turkey loads 4 shot, carry a couple 5’s in my pocket! My son & I just papered it on Sat! At 25 yd, 35 yd & 50 yards. We shot 3 turkey targets at 50 yards had 24, 27, 31 pellets to the head & neck! If a Gobbler walks by at 50 & is standing still I’m gonna take him!! Killed my other birds 30 or less! Easy shoot’n gun too! I’m all about taken then close but these newer loads got some pop!! Just bought fiber optic sights for it to. Good camo!
For a good dependable, affordable gun cant beat a Remington 870 w/full choke 3 incher!! Killed lots of birds with one! Can’t wear’m out!! Just my 2 cents! Good luck!!

well, five of my friends are WHP oe county sheriffs deputies and that’s what they call them. I was the one who alerted them that the stuff was on the street and they thanked me.

Not too sure i care what you think…

Why do you call them “cop killas”? Do you think it is cool or funny to kill cops? Are you a “gansta”?

“we call the shot ‘cop killa’ and the guys in the carolinas are using it for coyotes out to 50 yards.”

Wow pretty disrespectful name for a shotgun load. Maybe if you would attend a law enforcement funeral and see the pain in the families eyes you would consider changing it to yote killa.

    Wade,

What choke you running in your 870? I’m running the Carlson Coyote Special. I’m getting about 175 pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. Hevi Shot Mag Blend. 3.5″.

Curious if there is something out there better.

if you want lightweight a 20ga would fit the bill with todays ammo and chokes guys are getting around 150 pellets in a 10″ circle at 40yds. pair it with hevi shot or some mega weight. i believe nitro ammo company sells 20ga ammo and they even tell you what choke they work best out of.
