While FGF duties and keeping up with Spring yardwork on two houses this year have kept me from making a pilgramage to Rainy this year we have been able to get out an enjoy several days of excellant crappie action here in the metro area

Last week were were set up on a shallow breakline pulling crappies out of 6′ FOW when my buddy hooks into what he thinks is a DONK crappie… We were all surprised when he gets it to the boat and realized that it was a cute little painted turtle! Anyone else ever catch a turtle on a fathead?

The mark of a brave man is to unhook the turtle.

A few yrs back while fishing Prescott, WI, I watched a father son combo chase the kid’s line around for at least a half hour. Turned out to be a huge snapper. The look on the poor kids face priceless No hook removal there either- – jerr

Those softshells are the worst. Only turtle I’m afraid to pick up. Tried once and found out those long necks do indeed reach the back end….

Fishing a cat tourney overnight a few years back we caught about 1/2 dozen softshells…maybe some we re-catches. We released all without hooks I believe, but it was tricky. The ones hooked in the claws were a little tricky. Had to block their head with a paddle.

I’ve seen many painted turtles caught over the years.

As a kid, I thought I was funny once casting a spinnerbait at 3 big turtle heads above the water. Much to my surprise, one chased it down. So a snapper needlessly ended up with a spinnerbait in it’s nose. No tempting fate on hook removal with that one.

One time we were in remote Canadian water and my partner hooked a seagul with a flatfish. At least 2 trebles but I vaguely remember 3. I voted he let it go and not chance getting injured himself but to his credit he ran that bird down with his boat, caught it, and unhooked it.

    That is impressive.

Has anyone ever hooked a loon. I love watching loons, but I hate it when they hang around when I am fishing with cranks or large minnows. I would hate to ever hook into one.

Was bit by a loon across my hand last summer trying to remove a supermodel from the tip of the webbing on its foot. Not a fun day!

I’ve been close but have avoided it so far. I’ve watched them chase spinnerbaits before. That’ll make a guy reel really fast!

A few falls ago I was fishing for muskie on Waconia with sucker minnows. Cormorant dove under and bit our sucker, we hooked in the wing and did manage to take the hook out. Needless to say it was a hell of a fight.

Lots of all three kinds of turtles back when I catfished more often. (I’ve matured since then). It’s usually not that hard to remove the hook…seagulls,a pelican and a duck over the years,a muskrat once on a tip-up…

Creepiest was tossing cranks for walleyes over weeds late one early summer night when I hooked a bat. I reeled in what I thought (in the dark) was a clump of weeds, swung it into my hand, and turned on the headlamp. I was surprised to see a bat, hooked in the wing.

I unhooked him,sat him near the bow,and continued fishing…after explaining to a friend in a nearby boat the difference between a “scream like a little girl” and a “yelp”. I’d “yelped”.

Anyweay,it took a while for him to get the strength to fly off,but eventually I looked and he was gone.

My personal record was 9 turtles of 3 species on Pool 4 fishing a small trickle of water that was coming thru the trees from a back water slough, all but 2 were hooked in the neck or head.

Many years ago I was fishing off the dock at the cabin and I hooked a large painted turtle. He looked mad and I didn’t want to reach in the water to grab him, so I reached for the landing net resting below a chair on the pontoon that was tied to the dock. While unhooking the net from the chair, I knocked it over revealing an angry swarm of bees. So in one hand I held my fishing rod with a turtle and in the other was a net full of angry bees tangled around a pontoon chair. I hollered for my boyfriend (who’s now my husband) to come help me, but he was napping in the cabin and swears he never heard me. It was a memorable afternoon!

I read this post and it reminded me of the article in the Trib a year or two ago of the guy who caught a coyote.

    http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/bass-fishing/2010/08/wisconsin-angler-catches-coyote-frog-lure

I’ve not personally ever caught a turtle, but my buddy has caught at least 2 while fishing with me.

I can just picture how this one would have gone down if it were the boys from Swamp People “CHOOT ‘EM IN DA HEAD JUNIOR…CHOOT ‘EM!!”

have caught many. but the wierdest one was a snapper last year. been fishing for a day or 2 and the live well was a home made mesh one. well we get back saturday after a morning gill run. I put my feet on the sides of the well to poor the mornign catch in . Look down and go …geee……who put the big rock in there on end? oh well. with my toes about 5 inches from the edge, it dawned on me…..huge snapper. so i get up tell the kids to come over and my father in law says “big deal” they are ll over teh place. and i said the size of a 5 gallon bucket? he said i was exagerataed. so took a stick to “help” him out of the live well and I could hear him hear him yhelling from teh cabin ” holy _ _ _ _ that thing is huge.”

I watched my friend on accident catch a duckling while we were fishing for BH. The duck’s foot was tangled in his line and he reeled up and released him to a very pissed off hen..
