Lindy Rig Set-Up

A buddy and I were discussing this topic today since it is the main method we use on our Canada trip in early June, so let’s see what other people think. He is a Lindy Rig purist and uses mono for his main line (8 lb) and mono on his leader (6 lb) as well. I have started to experiment with Fireline on the main line (8 lb) and either mono or fluro leaders. How are other people out there setting up their rigs and why? I am curious. Thanks for the input.

i’ve been using braid all the way for 3-4 years with no adverse effect. i suspect it’s because the braid is so thin.

8 lbs mono to 6 or 8 lbs flouro leader. I like mono because I don’t want the fish to feel me if I’m a little slow. Plus sometimes if I’m not sure it’s a fish I can let it load up a little longer trying to figure it out. And if for no other reason I like rocking the boat with my hooksets. I don’t like the reel fast to set the hook so as not to rip the hook out you have to do with fireline.

Braid on the main line and florocarbon leader for the past few years with good success.

2-4lb fireline crystal on the main line and 6lb vanish for the leader. Been doing that for three years and is awesome.

If the fish are finicky, I will use nylon monofilaments. If they’re aggressive, Fireline or braid superlines. I prefer to give them a hookset before they swallow the bait.

Sandmannd, you are using 2-4lb main line for Walleyes and then a 6lb leader?
Not trying to sound off, but that seems wierd to me. What is your reasoning and how does it works out? I guess that combo would not be in my radar. Maybe that is why you are so lucky with it? The wallies think like me and strike!

The time of year we go in June the fish are aggressive and when I feel resistance on the end of my line I set the hook. I do not give the fish a lot time to swallow the bait and I may lose some fish, but I also feel I don’t kill a lot of fish by hooking them too deep. Because the fireline is so sensitive I feel like I feel fish better and have better hook setting than with mono. Just my thoughts.

What fluoro line is best for snells? I tried vanish a couple years ago and was not all that impressed.

I use either Stren Magnathin(green) or PLine CX Premium(moss green) in 6lb for my snells. The PLine is floro coated, either one is very good,it is all I haved used for the last 6/7 years and do not plan on changing anytime soon.My main line is one or the other depending on what I can get in 6 or 8lb.

x2! 6 lb fireline for the main line and 6lb Vanish for a leader. deadly on Mille Lacs. I use the same setup for lindy rigging on Rainy in july, 35+ FOW works great!

I don’t lindy rig all that much but when I do this is the same set up I use. Been working for me for as long as I can remember.

I use braid for most applications but I still have more confidence rigging with mono. I use 6 lb. Trilene XT.

8# Stren clear blue or Sufix Elite for main, 6# same for leader.
Tried others and keep coming back to these two.

    Braid and Mono –

Flouro sinks – if you want your bait dragging on the bottom – use flouro. If you want it to float up a bit – use light mono. 12 lb braid on the main line is fine.

    Just my two cents.

Or just keep your sinker a few inches higher above bottom then you would when fishing other leader material.

4lb fireline is a lot stronger than 6lb vanish. I also use the fireline for jigging so I can just take off the lindy, tie on a jig and continue fishing. If I get snagged up that snell breaks off before the fireline will break.
