Went to FF yesterday to pick up a few Raps for today. One in particular was one that looked pretty close to a Walleye, right down to the eyes. They looked like marbles. Put in just north of Lake City this morn. Found out the northerns really like baby Walleyes. Some of them practically inhaled them. Got my limit in no time. Bad thing was, 2 big girls had to go in the box because by the time I got them unhooked I new they weren’t going to make it. The boat was covered with blood. One more odd thing was, The males were physically okay, but, the females were all beat up. Lots of cuts and bruises.

I have been fortunate to watch muskies spawn many times from my cabin deck. I assume northerns have the same ritual. Large female slowly swims a zig zag pattern while smaller males ram into her and give her love bites. I have watched them do this for 20 minutes or so until the large female goes on her side and starts spewing eggs out. You can guess the rest. The only reason I haven’t seen northerns do this is that they spawn according to time period even under ice in a late spring.

Both females were slam full of eggs, so that makes a lot of sense.

Baby Walleye shad raps are one of my all time favorites.

Awesomw for open water walleyes on lake superior! Trout and salmon like them too.

I have seen norther spawn several times and they do it the same way as you said for muskie.
