My partner and I recently purchased new electronics for our tournament boat and we bought the Humminbird 587 ci HD di. It is a slick unit and we are really looking forward to using it. Just wondering which GPS chips people prefer on here and what the big difference is? I know a lot of people sell their old ones to get the newest but we just need a chip with decent contours.

I have a new 788ci I purchased the lakemaster. If you decide on the Lakemaster, PM me before you buy.

Lakemaster has better detail if your lake is on the chip. I switched out the nav chip for the lm chip this year and it has been great down on the river.

Just got back from Erie and was disappointed to see LM showed nothing. Navionics has all the reefs. Just depends were you fish. LM has more HD lakes, but are they yours?

You have to look at the lake lists and find which one has the most HD lakes in your area.

Since Humminbird bought Lakemaster, and they seem to have nice features maybe Lakemaster is the way to go for you. I personally need both. ;-)

You can also zoom in farther (at least on Lowrance units) with Lakemaster, so that can help on a smaller unit like you have.
