i was thinking FTF. There are WAY too many digital events in my life now…

half of the fun of poker is being able to read the opposing players. Going internet makes it just an odds calculation situation. With FTF you’ve got a chance at reading ‘tells’ and blowing bluffs out of the water…

Don’t start with me though. When they shut down all the online poker sites I was close to going on a rampage.

A couple FYI’s… 1 all the gambling sites have not been shut down and more importantly playing or hosting a poker game in Minnesota is NOT illegal.

    Carry on!

It’s illegal if money is envolved. Enforced? Would not want to be the first to find out.

Nope, as long as there is no fee/charge/rake it is 100 percent legal to play and gamble for real money among ourselves in Minnesota.

In the state of Minnesota, home poker games are an accepted form of gambling. Minnesota state law specifies that “Social bets are allowed only if they are done in a private social setting”. Social gambling is only illegal when it pertains to “organized, commercialized, or systematic gambling”, or when the owner/host of the residence profits in some way from the home poker game other than actual gambling profits from playing the card game.

Wouldn’t this be organized? Pretty easy to go over that $200 limit…. For instance, even if you set up a game with a $25 entry, you can only have 8 people at the table. I just assumed this was a bigger game.

Pier are you talking about subscription based internet websites? PM if there is a site with sit n gos and tourneys where you can set up an account and cash out 100%. I’d love to start playing again.

I didn’t check out any of those links. I knew that home games were still legal. So there is a $200 prize pool limit to be legal?

Pug, I play at Sportsbook.com but there are many sites out there. Fulltilt and Pokerstars were the only 2 shut down by the Guv for various banking “money laundering” issues. Ultimate-bet went bankrupt I believe too.

I hear betonline, bogdogg, and lockpoker are pretty good!

There is no monetary limits on a cash poker game in Minnesota.
If you are talking a Holdem tourney as stated in the Law/regs and you are concerned about the limit, you still are looking at a $50 buy in for the tourney which isn’t chopped liver. Just pay out $200 for 1st, 2nd $125, 3rd $75 which is about right for 8 players.

Jon, I see your point for being safe and smart about it but it’s pretty unlikely you’ll get busted on a technicality in this instance. But like you said you would hate to be the 1st guy ever being busted.

We, in our home games originally played No-Limit hold-em tourneys exclusivley to start, but that gets old and boring quickly. Particularly if you bust out early in a tourney and have to wait for the NITS “ultra-tight players” to Finnish up.
So we, in our home games that include a few of MPLS’s finest police officers play a lot of Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Stud, hold-em, Razz and various other home-brew games.

Good luck on the felt or in Puggs case the old Formica kitchen table!

As far as Jon’s advice of taking this private or using the PM feature that would make sense. Not so much for the law end of things but with the many Internet lurkers out there it would probably be wise to keep the location of the game some-what secret.

well, we could poll to see what nite would generate the most players and if we all were to cover expenses of the site, that seems to be allowed.
after taht we just need to designate/volunteer someone to be the organizer and do the communication thru PMs thereafter. the hudson location seemed to make sense as central to most of us, but i’m biased…

Yep if we have enough people willing I will host the event and it will be in Hudson. I was even thinking that if anyone was interested we could have an hour or two before the game to socialize and hell we could even have a small swap meet I have a ton of stuff to get rid of!!! I would need a few more tables (depending on # of people) and I would have some pop and probably chips, and charge probably $5. extra per person FOR FOOD, which is 100% legal as long as I am not making a profit. SO if anyone is interested feel free to message me, and throw out what day would work best for everyone!
