As a superintendent on the job site building restaurants across the United States, I’ll pass on the chains and take the Mom and Pop bar for a lunch most any day!
Now granted not all of them are created equal, but some of the honest to goodness absolute best burgers come from your local bar at lunch!
Usually quite a bit less money too boot!
deertrackerPosts: 9241March 23, 2012 at 12:50 am #1051638That is true. The best burger I have ever had came from a little chinese place in Warroad, MN. Don’t ask me why I ordered a cheeseburger at a chinese place….I just did.
DTMarch 23, 2012 at 12:58 am #1051640There are those places that you can find some of the absolute best suprises!
I’ve got one in Altoona IA, Trussville AL, Belton MO, 3 in KC MO,
Heck I’ve got one in most of the cities that I’ve worked in. Omaha, 3 suburbs in Chi-town, 3 in Cinci, 2 in Nashville, a couple in Tolledo,
anyway you get the picture.
I have found a way to eat very well and really quite good to boot.March 23, 2012 at 1:26 am #1051654I really like 5 guys and Smashburger, and have frequented them for years now.
Rarely do I eat a burger anymore at Smashburger, pretty darn good, darn near perfect with an egg on top, but trying to cut back a little on the fat, smash chicken is my preferred choice and it’s freaking awesome.
5 Guys has huge hype around it, and overall I think it’s well deserved I think I lot lot of people expect a mind blowing burger with amazing seasoning. That’s not really what five guys is about, it’s pretty simple taking very good ingredients and not messing with them, letting them shine on their own. Simplistically beautiful IMHO, I don’t feel dirty like I’m eating a thousand chemicals like I do had I ever to stop at McDonald’s, overall their biggest downside is my wife allergy to peanuts, and sheer advoidance to the place on that basis alone, peanuts everywhere and peanut oil.
Both Smashburger and 5 guys IMHO are awesome additions to the burger community, but they need to be respected, check out the calorie counts on those bad boys. Once a month for 5 guys, couple times a month maybe for Smashburger.
O
Burger Jone’s green chili burger it pretty awesome too.
March 23, 2012 at 1:34 am #1051656Since we are talkin’ burgers…not in TC but the best dang restaurant burger for me is Newt’s in Rochester. Papa Humphries (Kris’s dad or should I say Kim’s ex) said “Look out Newt’s” when he brought 5 Guys to town. Since then Newt’s opened a second location. Culver’s and 5 Guys are good but a distant second…
Seriously, if you get to Rochester try Newt’s for burgers and John Hardy’s for BBQ. Both small local eateries with fabulous food for the dollar. :waytogo

Since Tunicci’s left, I have been struggling to find a nice burger place. I am going to give Wild Bills a shot next week though.
I’ve had burgers at Wild Bills twice. Very good both times.
March 23, 2012 at 1:07 pm #1051745Speaking of burgers, I was at the U of MN last week for some training. Now, I have been hearing about their “meat lab” for years, but they are only open Wednesdays from 2:00 – 5:00…not exactly convenient for me. Since I just so happened to be on campus (in the Food Science building, so less) last Wednesday, I got the opportunity to do som shopping. I came away with a good variety of meat. I also stopped by the “dairy lab” and got some tasty cheeses, too!
I got some BBQ Bacon Cheeseburgers that we tried last night, and they were mighty good. I also got some wild rice burgers that I am looking forward to trying.

March 23, 2012 at 1:57 pm #1051760That place was made for Ralph apperantly if you know Ralph!..
Speaking of non chain Burgers…. THE GOLDEN NUGGET in Minnetonka, MN is to die for. I haven’t been to the New location after they got booted out of the old dig’s… Best Mushroom Burger in town back in the day! Summit on tap is nice perk too…

Guy I work with says the Golden Nugget puts most burgers to shame, including 5 guys, and in the new place they’re still as good as ever. fwiw

LAZY, LAZY, LAZY….Drive through too I suppose?…
Yep. Hey, I needed to keep driving to Dick’s to try on some Costa that everyone on this website demands I purchase.
March 23, 2012 at 5:48 pm #1051844The Costa’s that I have encountered at D icks “Richfield” and Gander “eden prairie, lakeville” have been the Plastic 400 lenses I do believe. Pretty poor selection for the most part from my experience, but at least you can get the look and feel of the frames.
For the record, Wendy’s Double classic for lunch and yes we used the Drive-Thru…
March 24, 2012 at 12:01 am #1051908If any of you get a chance I would highly recommend going to “Runyon’s” in Minneapolis!
Hands down best burgers ever…….!

Were you hungry again about a hour later?
March 25, 2012 at 12:46 pm #1052167It seems to me that most burger nowadays have very little flavor to the meat. Not like a good old fashion burger that Millie would cook up in the back of Ziskies grocery at there lunch counter. Nice little 1/4 pounders fried up on the grill with a nice slice of onion.
Seems like most places now try to compensate for the lack of flavor in the meat by increasing the size of the burger or amount of toppings. Give me a burger that is fantastic with almost nothing on it and that will be a great burger.

And that is the Mom and Pop shoppe, Bar Sandwich that I speak of. Best in the land!
March 26, 2012 at 10:25 am #1052377I don’t think there is any question most restaurant burgers are much better than a burger chain.
One of my favorites when I lived in the area was a Nook Burger.
On a local note. Sandy’s bar on Penn, despite the sign, does not have world famous burgers.

No, I’d agree, but they ain’t to bad for a smaller not fancy burger.
And they were definetly better than Smash burger. We hit the Smash burger place off off Ford parkway Sunday and if I had to rate their swiss mushroon burger I’d give it a 4 out of a possible 10, and that’s being generous.
Meat patty was so-so and the mushrooms (?) were so garlicly I couldn’t finish the burger.
Fries were the typical thin cut fast food style, tatsed ok as we got them without seasoning or salt on them and added salt ourself, but we’re not fans of thin cut fries.Al

March 26, 2012 at 7:08 pm #1052675OK, I would give Wild Bills a …
I went with the Wild Bills burger minus the fungus and it was pretty good.
4 US army service personal were there, and WB’s gave them a free dessert for their service. I thought that was a pretty cool thing to do for our military. I can definitely see me going back in the future…
