I live in an area of the northwest metro where there is sand for miles in any direction.

Where would be a good area with black dirt to check out tonight?

Any golf course. Well, any non-private golf course. It’s a lot easier since they trim the fairways and greens nice and short.

This is a good time of year to hit my in-laws crop fields since they have not planted yet. Easy pickings in the bare black dirt

    I’ll be out tonight

I had to drive down near Waverly last night to get my taxes done… after the rain, on the way home, the road was “greasy”… millions of frogs were tar sitting along the low spots and lakes… some spots looked like a blood bath, there were so many

I had the same thing last year, even went and bought a worm ranch to store them, but they only lasted about 2 weeks in the fridge…

I didn’t get out until my morning walk, but I did manage to find about 3 dozen healthy crawlers. Nothing fun about being attacked by all of the starving robins in town…..but it was worth it! I will try again tonight, too.

I find my biggest and fattest crawlers in the area around my septic tanks. Sometimes they are freaky big.

I found one on a flood plain under a rock that was freakishly big.

Who says worms aren’t good flathead bait.

Ok, that isn’t the one I found. The one I found was probably 2Xs as big as the biggest ones you normally find.

Because of the fertilizer they use these crawlers must be used soon. They normally don’t last a long time (month+) in bedding.

We’ve never had a problem harvesting them a week before opener. Usually get enough to last well into summer, if not most of the season?

Sounds like you are a better crawler care taker than me. I have tried golf course crawlers before and they did not last very long. Maybe I’ll try ’em again, could have been how I kept them or just had a few too many injured in the batch.

Maybe rinse them afterwards and see if that helps. I would think if it was the fertilizer, golf courses would not have so many in the first place.

I have tried keeping crawlers once by getting the bedding and food. Like I said, I did it once. I think I overfed them and they got that rot they warn you about.

My brother on the other fricken hand just throws the bedding in a 5 gallon pail in the cabin shed and keeps them moist. Personally I think he keeps them too wet, yet they stay healthy.

I’ve heard the food is not necessary. Has anyone else heard that?

Are you sure they are crawlers?

As long as they move I don’t care what they are.

I picked up about 40 doz the other night. I have all my boxes in the garage fridge at 45degrees. I won’t feed mine for a few months…and then sparingly.

I empty my boxes every 2 weeks to “fluff” the bedding and remove any dead ones. Don’t get many dead ones and they stay alive all summer.

The guy that give me these pointers, will release his leftovers in October when he’s done fishing….he normally picks up around 65doz.

The ‘fat-n-sassy’ bedding has been the best. Couldn’t keep mine alive in the walmart stuff.

I picked up about 3 doz. last night. I put them in an old 2 gal. styro. minnow bucket filled with bedding. How many more could I safely store in there with out over crowding?

I do the same. Make sure not to use too much water in the bedding! Keep them all year and let the extras go end of season.

Pulled 4 dozen off the parking lot today behind my warehouse There’s a big drain in the middle of the lot, and they all seemed to funnel that direction- problem was finding dirt

Technically speaking, you cannot dump crawlers anywhere. They are invasives. I’m sure a lot of people know that by now, but I was so amazed the first time I heard it that I like to throw it out there.
