How many meals per week do you eat fish? I personally eat fish about twice per week. I would have it more but just don’t have time during the week to make that many meals myself. Just curious what others do.

Maybe a half dozen times a year for me and almost always at a resort I trust that will cook my fresh catch.
February 25, 2012 at 3:00 pm #1042933When I fix a batch of fish it’s normally enough I can snack on it cold or warmed for several days or meals. I guess it’s no different than making a meatloaf or smoking a turkey and eating the leftovers for several days.

I will admit with the economic conditions, I have been fishing and hunting with more food in mind, but consumption hasn’t increased a great deal.

hadnt had any fish for a couple weeks, but today had a piece of smoked catfish with my coffee, am fryin up some northern tomorrow and hope to have fresh walleye/sauger after monday’s fishin trip.
i fix it fresh as often as possible, so, like herb, i will fry up some xtra and eat leftovers cold or nuked for a day or 2.Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559February 25, 2012 at 3:31 pm #1042946I keep enough of whatever I am fishing for to have a meal when I get home. During the open water I’ll eat fish a couple times a week at most. I don’t freeze crappies, sunfish or walleye/sauger and I seldom keep northerns unless one gets deep hooked and dies on me. Lake trout and salmon will often get frozen but then I can’t sit down with the wife and consume a whole fillet,or lake trout, when the fish weighed in at 15 pounds. What does get frozen likely will see the smoker within a few days of arriving back home and smoked fish doesn’t have a very good chance of being around long around me.
The wife and I enjoy FRESH fish. Frozen fish are a thing of the past.

I do buy store fish but prefer to have wild.
Most of the time I have enough panfish – catfish so that does not happen often..

I eat canned tuna 4-5 times a week. Usually for breakfast with an avocado.
I eat sushi at least once a week as a treat. HyVee makes it fresh.
If I ever figure how to catch some crappie again, I’ll eat them once a week.I think I have eaten fried fish twice in the last five years.

Same for me. 6 meals per year (give or take) on caught fish.
Flown in sea food. Now we are talking. Much more frequently.

I usually keep enough to get me through the freeze up and the thaw. One 16 or 17 inch walleye is perfect for the wife and I, surrounded by other goodies. Four gills split between us is perfect. I’d eat it 4 times a week if I could keep that much fish in the house.

In Canada – every day, we have a shore lunch ( 10 Days )
BWCA – 4 days of deep fried walleye ( 4 days)
In everyday life – 3 times a week. ( sushi, swordfish, tuna, sea bass, salmon, halibut, shrimp, scallops, crab, etc. )

February 25, 2012 at 8:54 pm #1042999My boys would eat fish every meal if I let them. I keep it to 1 to 2 meals per month. Unless I am in Red Wing on my vacation then it is 2-4 times a week. After I come home with my possession limit, that lasts us a few months. In the summer I concentrate on Catfishing and they are almost inedible on the lake where I fish due to high fat content. I enjoy perch in the winter when I can get them. Between fish and the couple deer that end up in my freezer we take a major dent out of our food costs by enjoying what the land and water gives us. I also like sushi.
February 25, 2012 at 9:40 pm #1043006I eat it about once a week, mostly store bought. I eaat caught panfish about 6-12 times a year, mostly in the winter or when my bro fries some of his up. The occasional gut hooked fish too.
I will be upping it to t least 2 times a week for health reasons. Not a health reason in particular, but because of what I read. Omegas.

February 25, 2012 at 9:54 pm #1043011I east it about once a week. I freeze most of mine and when fresh catfish comes in the spring I eat alot more then, even if I have some left over from last year. Fresh catfish and home made tartar sauce with fried potatoes and coleslaw is hard to beat.
February 26, 2012 at 12:44 am #1043036Nothing tastes better and is more satisfying than eating a fish I’ve caught. I would guess that I eat on average 2-3 meals a week. I primarily eat panfish, but I will also keep many other species of fish to eat when the lake, river, or stream will give them up. If they’re of a good eating size (not too big or little) I will usually keep walleye, trout, catfish/bullhead, and pike. The only fish that always goes back without a second thought is bass and Lake Mendota catfish.
There’s a few species I’ve wanted to try and have not been able to get up the nerve yet. Sheepshead and suckers.
I would also like to try eelpout and cisco at some point, but there’s not many places to catch them in southern wisconsin

February 26, 2012 at 11:39 am #1043087Lol, didnt know you could eat to much fish. I eat it as often as I can catch it. During the winter the freezer is full of deer, coon or what ever else I hunt. If it were just me, I wouldnt have to buy anything from the store other milk and bread. However, the boy and the wife like chicken once in a while and they say that crow and pheasant doesnt count. My boy also refuses to eat the coon so when I cook it theres always enough for leftovers for lunch.

Chevy, you do know you live north of the Mason-Dixon line…..right?February 26, 2012 at 1:04 pm #1043116I used to eat fish when I could catch them due to my limited time on the water, but the overtly self-righteous preachy discourse about how one guy can ruin a fishery from Itasca to the Louisiana Delta has really had an impact on me.
These days, even being a Catholic during lent, I choose to eat vegetarian on Fridays. Just for good measure I go to the local Hy Vee and purchase fish to release back in the system. Last week, a box of Van De Kamp’s fish sticks were set free here in North-central Iowa while I ate cream cheese stuffed portabella heads, establishing me as the new ethical standard by which me and those of like mind are passing judgement on the remainder of you. Please note that when I say, “those of like mind” my unconcealed need for superiority drives me to push the frontier of ethical purity to the point where none can match my clearly superior state of enlightenment.
Even when I do go fishing, I tend to protect the resource by not catching fish. The critical element supporting my protection of the resource is that I sit on the best spot with the Humminbird lit from top to bottom, not catching a thing while others are prevented from getting to the “spot on a spot” due to my excellent blocking and boat handling skills.
At times, I’ll cut unnecessarily close to someone who’s anchored or cruising the shoreline flipping and casting. While they seem heavily annoyed by this, my keen understanding of what’s best for everyone allows me to maintain an inflated sense of righteousness and pride, knowing that by costing him (or her) a successful outing, I have likely spared a heavy toll on what is clearly a limited resource.
Although I do try not to twist the knife of their inferiority too much, saying things like “you’re within your legal right” and all, it’s a little irresistible at times, and I have to exercise a little more self control. This is clearly a skill I’ve mastered having not eaten a walleye in many, many years despite their tasty deliciousness. Further evidence is the subtlety with which I jab at people, rather than just coming out and saying, “I’m better than you, and I’m judging you… harshly.”
Usually after stating that what you’re doing is perfectly legal, I’ll pick up a pay phone (yes they still exist) and anonymously ring the Dept of Homeland Security with a hot tip. I suspect that being wired to a polygraph under the spotlight in a vault is a nearly ideal environment to reconsider your transgressions against our precious natural resources, and if you’ve done nothing wrong then you clearly have nothing to worry about and should just be OK with this. One day you’ll be thanking me in your dreams for aiding in your cultivation toward a higher state of being.
I’ll post some release photos next week, when I plan to introduce a dozen or so filet-o-fish sandwiches with cheese into the local ecosystem.
