My son and his GF will be moving to Mankato this August, he will be finishing his Bachelors in Engineering over the next 2 years there.

Just wondering if anyone has some tips on good places to look for work or other things that they should make sure and see/do.

They already have a place to live starting August 1st, but they will both need to find jobs. Both currently work in customer service jobs in a call center here in Eau Claire, my son is a manager and works about 25 hours a week right now until he is finished with school. He is looking at an Engineering internship with the county that will last through the summer, which would be great on his resume and in the pocketbook!

Both are good kids, very dependable, and never miss work, so they will have good references.

    Thanks for any suggestions!!!

Lots of places to fish. Blue Earth river has walleyes and channel cats. Lots of lakes, I don’t get that way much, so I’m sure others will have more options, but no worries for fishing spots.

There is a call center in St. Peter(about 10 miles away) that is always hiring if they are looking to keep doing the same thing. As far as an engineering internship I am of no help there.

Fishing, you have the MN river right in town. Good catfishing and walleyes at the right times. Otherwise, Washington and Madison lakes are both close and both real good panfish/walleye lakes.

Make sure they eat at Zanz at least one time if they like Mexican food. Only one good thing there to eat, get the cheese chillitos. Place is a dive, but the chilito is a Mankato icon.

Is Mettler’s still open? Be sure to go there if it is.

be sure to have them go here, awesome pizza
and those cheese chilitos are addicting. Lots of possibilities as far as work goes. Have them stop at the career office on campus, they wil get them going in the right direction. Go Mav’s

I graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree from Mankato. I’m still paying off my bar tab, er, student loans, I mean. It is a great city with lots of opportunities for work.

While I was there, I worked at Taylor Corp (Glen Taylor’s printing company) in North Mankato. It had nothing to do with engineering, but it is a big company with lots of options for work.

As far as engineering opportunities, I would suggest looking at:

    Minn-kota (Division of Johnson Outdoors)

    or

Kato Engineering (Division of Emerson Industrial)

There are a number of other engineering firms as well. Do a google search and make some phone calls. Most engineering firms or manufacturers are interested in finding summer help to work on projects that we typically don’t have the time to tackle.

Thanks for all the tip guys, food places are always good to know about, not only for them but I’m guessing I will get to help move them and it will cost them a good meal and a few.

Ditto, try Taylor Corp for a job. Ran a press at Precision Press for three years while I went to MSU. Haven’t been back to the area for several years so not sure if these places still exist, but all the Taylor Corp companies, Carlson Craft, Fine Impressions, Precision Press employed a lot of college kids, especially Carlson Craft. Ah, the good old days….schooner night at the Albatross….
