However, as an arm chair biologist, I’d think that is a pretty minimal risk factor. And one could argue that what is the difference if no fizzing means death.
Not to brag or anything, but I am a Biologist and know a thing or two about sterility. Here is a much better option web page
That is pretty cool. The things people come up with never ceases to amaze me!February 21, 2012 at 6:07 pm #1041392

Actually “In Fisherman” suggested something similar to this years ago for the very issue with deep caught saugers. This is however the first one I have seen in the marketplace.February 21, 2012 at 7:04 pm #1041411Alright. The boat is coming out. Thanks BK- I’ve got the long rod on the mind again now….

I saw the subject of “fizzing” brought up so I will put in my $.02. How many people out there that use this practice use new sterilized needles every time? Do fish have super immune systems that can combat being injected through the skin, flesh and body cavity? How would you like to receive a flu shot from one of these used needles? Just food for thought.
That is something that goes over looked! Very good thought!
When the DNR or other organizations tranquilizing bear and other animals, or fish tagging, are they swabbing them with alcohol prior to darting them?
Not looking to start a fight, but just asking…?

I’ll guess, without any proof, yes. I assume if they are doing something to help the animal or research, they don’t want to ruin that with an infection. And I believe when they tag fish they swab the point of incision with iodine or something similar.
February 21, 2012 at 9:03 pm #1041462Hmmmmm….watched tagging on several occasions and never saw that.

Or not.It must not be a concern with fish? Maybe because they have the slime coat?
February 21, 2012 at 9:28 pm #1041474I would bet that a sterile needle is used for each dart. Most sterile needles have a protective cap that must be removed before use. Big difference from a fizzing needle that is used over and over and who knows where and how it is stored in between uses.

Do we need to sterilize our hooks too?
February 22, 2012 at 3:45 am #1041606I don’t think you are being a jerk. It’s biology.
I have not problem with people keeping a legal limit and i sure don’t want more govt reg, but it’s also clear that fishing deeper than 30′ is detrimental to the fishery.
Good post Pugsie… May your dogs live long
