Flags for Whitney

I just read that New Jersey will fly their flags at half staff for Whitney Houston. Huh? I thought that was an honor for Heads of State, Military and Law Enforcement. Now they are going to give it to a drug addict and alchoholic? What a sad time we live in. I’m going fishing in the morning and I’ll flip my portable only half way. NOT!!!!

But she meant so much! Can you imagine a world without, “How Will I Know” or “The Greatest Gift of All”?

if thats true it really cheapens the meaning of the half staff flag. usually when a crack head/alcoholic dies early because the way they lived we don’t blink an eye, some say good riddance, some say they had it coming, most don’t care one way or another. but if the crack head can sing we act like its a national tragedy…

Maybe we need a national day of observance for our fallen crack heads.

Anyone think that there will be a flag anywhere when any of us pass on to the great beyond?

To be clear, I am not ripping on her. She did not ask for this posthumously. I am ripping on the state that would do this. Addiction is not an easy thing to overcome.

Then again, it is New Jersey. What else do they have to hang their hat on?

I fully expect a half unraveled roll of toilet paper out of respect for me.

I will expect the same, even if it’s in the toilet.

Loved your voice Whitney. Choices? Not so much.

I may even be happy if I get it and it is used.

NJ governor defends decision to lower flags

WOW really!!! The results of the autopsy have not even been released yet! I am not saying I agree with the half staff but it is really sad to see how many people are quick to judge and throw stones, like pug said “Addiction is not an easy thing to overcome” very easy to criticize and judge someone but until you walk a mile in there shoes……. Just saying……

If you read the article in the link I posted above you will see that the governor also ordered flags lowered last year for Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

i would very strongly oppose the flag lowering even if she didn’t have personal demons. She was a talented singer, probably one of the best ever, but that sure doesn’t make her a role model or somebody’s whose death should be mourned on that level. If you lower the flag for her i think you really make in mean less for those who truly deserve it

If you flew at half staff for every day a soldier passed away, you would only need to put up the bottom half of the pole… (and I am a veteran) I won’t lose any sleep over what NJ does with their flag and it will not affect my feelings towards lowering it for anyone else. To each their own. (politicians are all crooks and cheats & they get half staff ?)

I take it back, it’s not sad or ridiculous, it’s downright disrespectful for all those who serve, lost their lives and deserve this honor. I really hate politicians and all the bs that goes with them. I can’t stand all the “hype” celebrities get either. Now if she had not got into drugs, continued to be a positive influence on kids and continued to help people around the world as she did when she was young, I might reconsider.

Maybe we should ask Chuck Testa? Hey Chuck, do you think flags should be flown at half staff?

I don’t think it is the right thing to do,
Do I consider her a hero? No.

I do like her music, I thought she was a fantastic Lady.
Yes; she had her drug addiction running her life for the past decade.
Many people have addictions that haunt them, it’s not really a choice those people have.

God bless the Lady that I remember, RIP Whitney

Drug related or not, flying the flag at half staff is not for entertainers, IMO. Kind of takes away from the meaning of it. I had thought Chris Christie might make a good presidential candidate. Not anymore.

Wow, so their (candidate) flag flying policy is a deal breaker for you, huh?

For me, I struggle with his climate change indoctrination. Other than that he seems like a straight shooter.

Oh sorry, does that make this political now?

No way should the Stars & Stripes be flown at half mast to honor the death of an entertainer, particularly one who’s death was presumedly caused by drug or alcohol overdose. Give me a break.

And I’ll be honest, I’ve become a big fan of Chris Christie lately. I’m disappointed.

I selected a few quotes from this thread and I agree that I don’t think that the flags should be flown at half-staff for an entertainer, actor, or actress.
I have a question for the rest of you to think about and want to know your thoughts on this subject.

In 2003, the flags were ordered by the President to be lowered to half-staff for a actor and entertainer, Bob Hope.

    There is always an exception

New Jersey also flew the flag at half staff for an entertainer allegedly involved with the mob. Frank Sinatra.

It’s their state, I say let them do what they want. According to a story I read, Christie has lowered the flag for every fallen soldier and officer of the law while in office.
