So here I go with another antiquated subject for most, but are there any CBers out there? I used to love talking on them and still try but all I ever get is skip. If anyone has any recomendations on the best antenna to help me reach farther I’m interested. Put a bid on ebay for a pair of 4′ whips from a freightliner.

The FW was a little upset with me when I proposed.
The wedding ring that I gave her was only a citizens band.
February 15, 2012 at 3:13 pm #1039212Its still big among the country boys in high school and college. I have one for my truck but rarely use it anymore. The best whips I’ve found are firesticks, I’ve got a set of 4ft that I keep meaning to put back on my truck.
February 15, 2012 at 4:39 pm #1039243Buy a good 2way like a generallee or take a good radio to a guy and have the finals tuned up on it
February 15, 2012 at 5:13 pm #1039261I didn’t even know there were still people that worked on them. I do alot of camping all over the country and sometimes there’s 3 or 4 vehicles. Its nice to pick up the mic and talk to everyone at the same time. For those situations a cb is a lot handier than a cell.
February 15, 2012 at 5:26 pm #1039275Still carry a portable (handheld) in the truck for emergencies…nice to be able to talk to truckers going by and also find out what the highway back-ups are being caused by…
Keep on Truckin…February 15, 2012 at 6:22 pm #1039294I have one in my truck, a bunch of us used to have them. Mostly pick up skip but that can be entertaining
February 15, 2012 at 7:47 pm #1039337With the whips you will be able to pick-up better than you can transmit….
To “get out” you will need to either kick up the power(not kosher with the FCC) or get a side band-which you need a FCC licence(VERY ignored).
After 20+ years…The chatter gets REAL boring….
But they do have some positives….
I have a 35yr old Motorola “Gray & White” 40 that I still use and she can still get out there well…..blufloydPosts: 698February 15, 2012 at 8:35 pm #1039344Set the standing wave right on a Motorola 40 and your gonna have an awesome legal radio. Used to have one 35 years ago.
February 15, 2012 at 10:45 pm #1039392One of the better CB antennas of the 70’s! A Niscopi Thunderbolt inverted Y.
That sucker never talked skip.
Oh, you’re talking mobile antennas! LOL!
February 15, 2012 at 11:33 pm #1039419Brian, I replaced my PDL2 for a HiGain Stack 3. Talked to my uncles from the “Wood Shack Base” on SSB, Counsel-II by SBE, used the Ham-II rotors. For some reason I still got them all. The 60ft tower has gone by the wayside when we reroofed and resided the house 6ish years ago.
Oh yea, My relatives lived in AK and AZ. No Skip on a clear cold night!!
February 16, 2012 at 12:01 am #1039430We started out with the Cobra Cam-89 and then moved into ssb, but the ssb models just didn’t have the modulation of the Cam-89. So we ended up with this little hummer.
We used a Shure mic though.
Adjustable to 35 watt tube finals and the rest solid state. Just a little clipping here and there to get it to run on 11 meters. With the 1500 w amp behind it, garage doors would go up and down by themselves. Neighbors with clock/radios beside their beds would hear me talking…without the radio turned on of course.
No channels, just had to know the frequencies.I had a solid state FT 301 with a digital VFO in my pickup for a while. What a hoot!
February 16, 2012 at 3:24 am #1039520Someone was runn’in a bit of juice with the powers of ham, Brian?
February 16, 2012 at 4:26 am #1039527Yeah, breaker 1-9, will someone start speaking English around here again!!
LOL!!
February 16, 2012 at 10:19 am #1039545so how would i go about kicking up the power in a mobile unit? Im not exactly looking to reach alabama, but i would like to get a range of 30-40 miles.
February 16, 2012 at 10:53 am #1039556RF Amplifiers for the 11 meter band are illegal and I’m not sure how you would google them.
What’s more important is when the skip is rolling in, your radio might “talk” further, but it won’t have any “ears”.
30 miles reliably on a CB (keyword reliably) is not possible.
February 16, 2012 at 1:10 pm #1039620to be completely honest, when I looked at this post I thought you spelt “CD” wrong and now that I see it’s a real thing I feel really young and have never heard of these things hha
February 16, 2012 at 1:30 pm #1039635Kinda dates us huh abartusek12?
In the ’70’s there was a CB magazine called S9. There was an article in it that said in 20 years, CB’s would be gone and replaced by “telephones in cars”. That was the only article I remember out of that mag, because I remember thinking “how cool would that be?”
Well the mag was wrong, it was 30 years and the fit in a persons pocket along with gps and something no one dreamed of, the internet.
It’s amazing what the space program has brought us over the last 40 years or so.
February 16, 2012 at 1:31 pm #1039636I don’t even think a person needs to know Morris Code to get a ham license any longer!
February 16, 2012 at 6:09 pm #1039768i thought the military had a cb that would reach that far during vietnam. Maybe Im thinking of the base. idk. So what would you say is the range on an average mobile cb? Mine does pretty much what I want it to do but just curious as to the limits on them. Thanks yall.
