Anyone ever transport their ice rods via the airport with a gun case? I’m still waiting to hear back from the TSA…if that ever happens… I use a semi-hard plastic gun case for my ice rods. Just don’t want to show up to the airport and cause a minor scene

I have flown with gun cases a couple times! You will have to check it separately and they will ask to see what is in it, but other than that way to easy to walk into an airport carrying a cased gun!!! As far as seeing it on the other end never had a problem there either, will have to pick up in over sized department.. Pretty easy good luck and have fun!!!

TSA will open it and take a look.
February 10, 2012 at 8:27 pm #1037611Thanks guys! Any particular locks to use, or ty-wraps for closing?
I got the generic TSA auto email back. Basically it said what I already know -“Fishing rods and poles are permitted as carry-on and checked baggage, but travelers should check with their airline to confirm that these items fit within airline size limitations for carry-on items. Ultimately, it is the airline’s decision as to whether or not fishing rods and poles can be transported as carry-on baggage.”
February 10, 2012 at 9:12 pm #1037629They WILL open anything they want to see. Don’t lock it, just make sure it has a good latch system. Don’t bother asking them to lock it after inspecting it, not going to happen.

Good luck.
February 10, 2012 at 9:27 pm #1037637I would assume that was for a carry on? I think Randy is checking a rifle case if I’m reading things right.
February 10, 2012 at 10:00 pm #1037647Have a friend who use a Bow case. Can hold a lot of rods and has a better size compared to a gun case.
February 10, 2012 at 10:52 pm #1037665Ya know, it is the most f’d up deal I can think of. Show up at the airport with a extremely high power rifle and ammo in a case, go to the counter where they demand that YOU unlock it and put a piece of paper in the case, and then tell you that you cannot lock it again even thought they want to take it out of your sight, or worse yet, toss it on the conveyor, unlocked. Really.
February 10, 2012 at 11:03 pm #1037670Yep, had a major second thought. At $25.00 to check the extra case in, and I can’t keep the case locked after inspection, I’m packing my reels in my carry-on and buying a couple cheap ice rods at a local shop. Tubes and spoons can all go in my first check-in bag and be done with it. God forbid if one(or all) of my custom rods get broken or stolen I would probably be in a federal prison.

I did this with my reels last winter when I took my reels to the FL keys. Worked great.
February 17, 2012 at 4:05 pm #1040119as far as a locked gun case. you should NEVER leave with your case unlocked.
I have flown with firearms and it is no problem at all.
if the tsa wants into the case, they will open, but you do not under any circumstances leave a firearm case unlocked when you hand it over.
when i’ve flown with a gun case, i print off the TSA and airlines rules for those items, and put them in the case. at the checked bag counter, announce what you have to declare, they will have you open it and inspect it, and then for a firearm, i’ve been escorted to the TSA inspection station, they again, have me unlock it, check it, then lock it back up and send it on its way.
I don’t know where you people are getting your info on leaving gun cases unlocked when they go with your luggage…

February 17, 2012 at 4:20 pm #1040126I would call them and ask as well. Too much confusion over what locks you are supposed to use. I bought a set of TSA locks only to find out I couldnt use them two years ago.
February 17, 2012 at 5:19 pm #1040151Situation is already handled. Tackle goes in my check-in bag, locator and reels are in the carry on bag, and I have 3 rods sitting in Wellington, CO already waiting on me.

Can you pack them and ship UPS or Fed Ex to someone??
Al
most parts of a firearm can be shipped privately, but the receiver/lower MUST go to an FFL.
