    Hey guys,

My FGF’s parents have a condo down in Fort Myers and two weeks from this Friday we’ll be heading down for a long weekend. Too bad it didn’t work out to get down there during spring training to get a chance to see the 2012 World Champion MN Twins but I’m hoping to get out for my first soft water fishing of 2012.

If anyone here has any experience fishing in the Fort Myers area I’m looking for any suggestions

It was too many years ago to remember the capt but I took a night fishing charter where we chased trout in the intercoastal near there. It was a blast.

Found it. He is near Tampa but could be a good source for you. I remember him being a great guy.

Look up The Bait Box on Sanibel Island. They have lots of guides through there that are good. My little bro has used them.

I’ve used Capt Steve everytime I’ve been to my parents place on Sanibel. Good guy. Here’s his info.

I used this charter two years ago. I was treated great. http://www.rushcharters.com

I had on the biggest snook Capt Chris had ever seen and I blew it. I am still bumbed out about it. There are many great charters and a lot of fish to catch. Have fun.

I think I used the same guys as suzuki a couple years back for a full day snook trip on Tampa Bay. Tons of fun. Great guide if it is the same guy.

Will get a 12 pack and go rent a rod and buy some squid at the peer in Fourt Myers. I have caught a lot of different fish there, even a very small shark of some kind. Can be hard to reel them up to the top of the peer but it is kinda fun.

Check out Sanibel Island. We fished out of Marco Island and it was a blast for inshore fishing. Sanibel has all the same opportunities I’m sure. We took a guided trip but all it was was dork rigs with shrimp and jigs/shrimp. Using medium weight 7′ walleye rods with 2500 series reels and braid.

On Marco the marina rented pontoons for $250/day. If we knew what we know now we would bring our walleye gear and rent a pontoon. Buy some shrimp, go fishing.

There are a couple of party boats that goes out of Ft Myers Beach, if you want to get off-shore for under $100. There are also split-charters for a few of the 6-pack boats there, which still isn’t bad. Get Away Marina is one of marinas there.

If you fish from shore, be careful about the fish you touch. Several small-looking fish have nasty teeth! Particulary the Mangrove Snapper. An 8″ fish will have a couple fangs over 1/2″ long, and has the same mentality as a snapping turtle.

If you want to try shore fishing, a number of marina’s and bait shops rent fishing poles. If you want to use one of your own, be SURE to rinse the rod & reel in fresh water as soon as you can once you are done fishing. The salt water is NASTY on equipment if given half a chance.

The two ways I would suggest fishing is with plastics on a jighead if you want to cast, and with shrimp on a carolina rig or under a popper.

Finally, if you want to keep anything, be sure you know the size limits and open/closed seasons as well as bag limits. Last I checked it was $500/fish if you keep something you shouldn’t.

Thanks a lot guys! It never ceases to amaze me what an AWESOME resource this website is that we can share info not just locally but even halfway across the county

If Kellie and/or her dad want to fish I’m thinking we’ll go the guide route and do some in-shore fishing in the mangroves. If it will just be me I’m planning to pick up a a rod or two on the cheap down there that I can leave at their condo and do some beach fishing… All of this info, especially giving me a couple good leads on bait shops where I can stop in and pick up some local advice, will be a HUGE help!

My in-laws live there most of the year now. They have used this guy many times and I believe he was their inspiration to get a boat of their own. This is right in the area you are looking for.

Our recommendation would be Captain Brad Brown- Moonlite Charters. 239-450-1476. http://www.moonlitecharters.com. Really nice guy — does Estero Bay and Pine Island Sound mostly.

Good luck. If you go, let me know how you do as we’ll be down there mid-March for spring break!!
