I moved to des moines 3 years ago and have found the fishing, even though i still go, really stinks. I have tried about every bait, lure, and jig i can find. Usualy i fish at the river off of 14th. Thats the only place i have found where i can get a bite. I have tried setting bank lines a few times and every time they get stollen. So, whats the secret to catchin fish in des moines?

I’m not familiar with the DesMoines area but if you come to Cedar Rapids you can catch a fish every other week
It’ll get better

In Cub Foods.
I didn’t find much when I lived there. I’d say your best bet is to hit Davenport and fish the river. Sailorville and it’s flowage isn’t much of anything. Not sure what’s in Lake Red Rock.

the center street bridge down to scotts street is some of the best flathead catfishing in the state. my father lives in the des moines area and doesn’t get to get out much but loves catfishing for some reason . he really wanted to catch some fish so a few times a year i bring the boat down to him to fish.i got in touch with a few people in that area from a diff message board and gave me some tips for that area and at the end of the day my dads arms are always tired. it will really only take you one outing to figure it out on that river as it’s pretty simple in that area. i catch more 15#+ flatheads walleye fishing there than i do anywhere on a jig/ringworm/paddletail. if my father and i are out, we usually get some shad or bluegill/sunfish and use them cut/alive. if you are without a boat, you can actually wade next to the wall and go to the corner where to bridge meets the wall and pull up some monsters in that area. i’ve never done it, but i used to see people doing it all the time. if you are in that area, you will probably start seeing a mess of people fishing on the bridge or below it.
if you are after an abundance of channels, saylorville is a very good spot drifting cutshad.
February 7, 2012 at 6:30 pm #1036374Hickory Grove Lake to the NE of you has good panfishing. We were there about a week ago and and had good fishing thru the ice. 7.5 to 9 inch gills. Very good eating.
hndPosts: 1579February 7, 2012 at 6:50 pm #1036379while there during a show in the fall, i fished the saylorville dam area and had some success catching walleyes. had more success catching enormous buffalos though….but i’ve seen big ones caught out of there.
February 8, 2012 at 1:31 pm #1036615A few years back I read an article in Iowa sportsmen about the Scott ave dam area. The previous month the DNR wrote 20 citations for over limits on walleyes caught there. I also read that the whitebass are so thick on thier spring runs that you could almost walk on thier backs without getting wet, don’t know if thats true now. Id say any dam in Des Moines would be worth a try.
