Was getting interested in the Hummingbird units. Being I’m getting older and LOVE my big screen TV, I thought I would look at the 1198? Birds with the big screen & side scan.

    YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!

    $2,800.00 at Cabela’s.

Looks like I’ll be staring at the little screens.

While the sticker shock appears bad I can assure you it’s worth it.

Yep, I get that but, I’m not wanting to play armed guard all summer while the boat is on the dock. I have a seasonal and like to leave the boat in the water the whole time I’m up there and just pull the electronics off when I leave.

Maybe need to think about sleeping on the boat deck.

Yikes is a good word. I reduced my wants to about $1,600. Plus $90.00 for installation and taxes. Still flipping a mental coin. How hard are these to install? Is $90.00 reasonable?

I would say yes it’s worth the $90. It took me probably an hour or so to run the wires, install the hardware (mounting) and make all the electronic connections.

If an hour or more of your time is worth $90 than yes. Go for it.

The prices on the larger units are INSANE. You can’t tell me it costs that much more to manufacture that a 10.4″ screen sonar than a smaller unit. Especially when you can buy top quality 45-50″ TVs for well under $1000.

Oh yeah. And don’t forget to buy the mapping chips to go with it.

I saw about a week ago a place that still had a few 1197’s for $2100 look around and maybe you can find one.

Depends on what unit you are getting and which mounting system you are going with. Anything from Ram will burn up at least half of your $90. I think installation would be closer to $150 if you have transducer, gps puck, and power to install. A tiller boat would be cheaper to rig though.

Go for it. $2800 will be cheap when you are piled up on the “nav hazard” –

Easier to see when you are going 75 MPH and looking for rock on the Canadian Shield.

Do an internet search and bring the lowest price you find to a local store. i did this and saved myself $400 on my 1198. Still a ton of money but do not regret it one bit. amazing things you see on the maps that you do not with smaller screens.

Knock on wood I haven’t piled up on a hazard yet after about 8 years up there.

But, my days of wanting to go 75 are long behind me. I bought a tiller to relax not be a “go fast.”

In any event, $2,800 isn’t going to happen. Maybe I better check that Powerball ticket from last night!

I bought a HB 798 a few years ago and EVERYBODY said “GO BIG!” on the screen…well, of course they were right.

But I love what the HB 798 does and was worth every penny.

What gets me most about this kind of stuff is they have the latest and greatest and then they discontinue the stuff that was the latest and greatest a few years ago. You can’t tell me that after a few years having a price point weekenders like me can deal with would be bad for the bottom line.

If you think just one 10″ is expensive. You’d really hate to write this check.
