So I cleaned my fish last weekend, and thought I cleaned the sink out after pretty well…. was I wrong! For this whole week after trying bleach and dish soap (purely for fragrance relief), it still lingers and comes back a day after. What do I do?!

Corey, filet the fish on a table with newspaper down next time. You’ll be glad you did. I wouldn’t let any guts in my disposer niether, thats what gardens are for. If you tried bleach now you have lutefisk.

February 3, 2012 at 9:10 pm #1035186COCA-COLA & BAKING SODA
First run some water down, then Pour 1/2 a cup of baking soda & some Coke down with a little more water.
Let sit for an hour, Pour some more Baking Soda down with water. Let sit for another hour then rinse well.
Caution, if the sink with a Garbage Disposal, flush with Cold Water & some Baking Soda while running, then pour approx 1/2 gallon of ice cubes down while continuing to run disposal & flushing with water. (Never Run HOT Water down a Disposal while running/flushing, You’ll burn it out).
February 3, 2012 at 9:10 pm #1035187I didn’t necessarily put the guts down the drain it was more or less the slime, blood, and scales. But I guess the same will still happen, its bacteria growth making the smell.

Has that actually happened to you personally?
I run everything down the disposal with hot water, including hot bacon grease. Never had a clog, never burned out a disposal. Got to use that hot water to wash away the grease……
February 3, 2012 at 9:15 pm #1035191Yeah never heard of not using hot water with a garbage disposal….
February 3, 2012 at 9:27 pm #1035195Yeah, I have heard not to use hot water down them but I still do. I have also ran ice down mine when it smells a bit and that works good too.
February 3, 2012 at 9:28 pm #1035196I got a small table along side the house that I clean them on if I don’t clean them by the river bottom. I clean on the table and throw the guts into a bucket with a lid. Within the next day or two I dump them back into the river so they don’t go to waist. I rinse the fillets and whatever with the hose and that keeps everything outside. Hot water washes all the oils and smell down the drain and a good way too keep the drains clean. I occasionally boil water and use that to cut any grease in the drain pipes, just to make sure and my drain pipes are always open. To me its much easier to clean fish outside and just wash everything down with the hose.

Out of curiosity. Is this sink stainless or porcelan? I’m guessing porcelan.
February 3, 2012 at 9:35 pm #1035200I think you’re probably dealing with pike slime. I don’t even let them boogers in the boat.I learned a few things after smelling the boat afterwards
February 3, 2012 at 9:55 pm #1035206Cut a lemon in half and drop it in. Run the disposal. The oil from the lemon skin will lubricate the disposal and the lemon juice will get rid of any smell. Don’t run the water while doing this. Let the lemon sit in the disposal for a while to soak into any remaining fish flesh stuck in the disposal. May have to repeat.
February 3, 2012 at 11:16 pm #1035236Is the smell actually the sink or is coming up the drain?
How much bleach did you use?

paloloPosts: 284starvin pilgrimPosts: 335February 4, 2012 at 12:21 am #1035249If you know any one in constuction, when they put in a kitchen counter top, they cut out a piece the size of the sink. 30″x20. I’ ve been using them for years. I’m a plumber and when ever I see one, I ask for it and give it away. To clean it, I wipe it down with paper towel and clean it with Lysol disinfectent. As for the sink, like some said, use ice first then lemon. As for the hot water, you’ld have to run a lot to burn it out. Just reach down and put your hand on it to check the temp of the motor. How fast you pull your hand back will tell you how hot it is.
February 4, 2012 at 1:06 am #1035260Not sure how it would work in a sink but I hear that Summers Eve will get the “fish” smell out.
February 4, 2012 at 2:49 am #1035284So are you talking the kitchen sink? What is it made of. I had a cheap laundry tub years ago that absorbed the fishy smell. after trying everything I had to pull it out and throw it away. It was a very cheap tub anyways.
Insinkerator makes a product for cleaning and refreshing your garbage disposal. It comes in a little pack with any new disposal but most likely you should be able to find it at any hardware store.February 4, 2012 at 2:50 am #1035285Quote:

I had one Burn out, could confirm reason but wife used to run hot water down it. It was 20+ years old too.
When I installed new one, directions stated Do Not run with Hot water.
