I’m going to be in Austin mn next week watchin my 7 year old nephew. Thinking of taking him ice fishing. Is there any good places close to go for sunfish or walleye? Any advise would be helpful thanks.

Mill Pond or east side. Lots of sunnies and crappies. Few northerns on mill pond. Either place has some walleyes but havent heard of many being caught this year. Lots of fish schooled up where the river runs into east side by I-90.
There is a “Fishing for a cure” contest on east side on sat 12-2pm. All proceeds going to Hormels cancer research.

I have no idea what the ice conditions are like in Austin as I live in Rochester but with the warm temps we have been having and the expected warm temps the rest of the week I would be very careful about were you go especially seeing as you are taking your seven year old nephew.

I’m from Austin – I second the concern about ice conditions due to warm weather. Also, Mill Pond has some current so that needs to be considered. If they have the fishing contest, that would be my choice.

I was fishing mill pond two weekends ago and there was about 12 inches of ice. I was fishing east of the island we caught a mix bag of fish overall a good time. Not sure about east side lake.
