    Tebow!

They have redeeming qualities when not eating babies and toddlers. They also enjoy house cats!

Truth to the fact is that unless you run into one, you can’t understand the level of fear and respect it drills into you. Deer hunting in Texas we had one with 2 cubs in our area.
Found an adult doe it took down.
Also heard it 2 different times “in the bush”, screaming an unGodly scream that will make you soil your pants.

Never did get the opportunity to see it. But it will scare the [censored] right out of ya!!!!!!

Being as discrete as they are, you just don’t know where they are in the area, so it will freak a guy out. We didn’t deer hunt for 2 weeks because of it. Didn’t have the “nuggets” to walk in the woods before sunrise or after sunset.

Called the DNR to help and they said to leave it alone as it was protected in Texas.

Just for reference there were 16 people killed by black bear and 10 by brown bear during the 2000’s. There were also 48 attacks by coyotes from 98-2003.

The odds of being attacked by any of these animals is so slim that it does not even warrant thinking about it.

The DNR repeatedly tells people they did not see what they reported seeing…. and treats people like fools that call in witnessing a cougar in the state…

They were probably ticketing them for giving actual proof of cougars. A very serious offense no doubt.

    From Wikipedia

    Quote:

At least 20 people in North America were killed by cougars between 1890 and 2011, including six in California. More than two-thirds of the Canadian fatalities occurred on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Fatal cougar attacks are extremely rare and occur much less frequently than fatal dog attacks, fatal snake bites, fatal lightning strikes, or fatal bee stings. Children are particularly vulnerable. The majority of the child victims listed here were alone or accompanied only by other children.

Hardly significant. It sounds to me like the killed it just because they could.

How else are you gonna prove your manhood, unless you shoot something in the name of “safety”?

seriously, there are grown men here that are using the “safety of my kids” excuse so that they have a reason to shoot something for the sake of shooting something…how sporting

    Ok… Gary’s post above actually has me shaking a bit… seriously…

This last deer season, I was sitting in a ground blind overlooking most of a mowed feild. about 5-10 mins after sun-down… I hear the most terrifying scream in my life. It almost sounded like an adult woman being killed. I had the top vent open of my blind and I stood up shaking like mad. I turn around in time to see 2 deer behind bolting off into the woods being chased by something. Whatever that something is was only 15 yards behind me in some very tall weeds.

I had my 30-06 in hand… but not sure if I could have even made a steady shot at that time. If anything had been in my bowels… they would have evacuated. I never did figure out what it was. But now… months later… I see Gary’s post above. I can’t say that I know much about Mt Lions. Never heard their scream before. I just pulled up google and youtube… and am now shaking again. I am 100% sure that was what it was. Blood curdling scream.

This is extremely close to what I heard… In fact… I remember the quick notion that maybe a neihbor lady was screaming to scare off the deer behind me… like someone from PETA. It was only a glancing thought… but I remember it clearly. Whatever it was went after 2 adult deer.

I have heard Bobcats make a sound that sounded just like a woman being murdered. It sure got my blood pumping. I hunted the Black Hills for many years and never saw a Mountain Lion and the deer were plentiful. The Black Hills Mountain Lion population has exploded and the deer and elk numbers are way way down. I am not sure what has changed over the last 10 years or so but Mountain Lions seem to be growing and expanding their range. If that is the case then the deer hunters better use any excuse they can to shoot them because I will bet you that a Mountain Lion population will do more damage to a deer herd than wolves will. Whether this guy was legal shooting the lion or not is a gray area but if the DNR doesn’t want other incidents like this then they better start educating the populose about Mountain Lions because I have a feeling there are going to be more of them in our future.

We also hear the most god awful blood curling sounds in the woods up by the pond, every summer. Someone also said it was a bobcat. FWIW, the neighbor has seen squatch in the woods too…

Hmm. I was at my brothers cabin one time and had to sleep outside in a tent because the cabin was full. I woke up to some spooky noises. I told myself that it was a couple raccoons, but I knew better.

I don’t think it was that cougar call though, that is pretty distinct to say the least.

Too bad I didn’t have the nerve to peak and see what it was, but I assumed it was either a couple yotes or a couple wolves.

My memory is kind of foxy now, but if I remember it was a lot of much quieter screeches.

LOL. In high school, my bedroom was in the basement, so I had a big egress window. Although I still think awaking to a skunk in there was the worst, I awoke one night to two stray cats that had gotten into a fight and fallen in. My God, that was an awful, awful sound! I can imagine the screams their bigger cousins can make!!!

Thanks for the information Farmboy as I didn’t know that. I kind of thought it would be much less then bears because theres more of them,,,but do we need to fine people who shoot them. Id like to keep things as normal as anyone else but when it comes to a population that may be growing I’d rather nip it in the bud. Theres already enough animals competeing for deer for food. Is it necessary to make more competition for the bears etc. so they end up getting hungry and attacking someone also. It probably wouldn’t make a big diffrence if there was a few breeding populations of cougars but who knows. I don’t know,,,do we need to let them establish a population just for names sake. My vote says no. You gotta remember in those western states the places they mostly are, are more so in unpopulated areas unlike the rural population in Minnesota and N,E, Iowa and I think theres a few there too from the questions being asked by the DNR. Is it really better to let them establish a breeding population where theres more population. If I remember right the local law enforcement in some western states has taken a few out after they have killed pets etc. Its just too unsafe for me to let any roam around in rural areas where theres cattle, pets and kids.

Wonder if the response would be the same if it were a moose?

Hitting one of them with a car is, well pretty solid.

You might want to google the definition of moose knuckle and then rephrase your post.

My, how this thread has strayed from the topic.

    That’s the sound Dave.

It just ain’t right. Not when you hear it coming from where you just walked from and that is the path you have to go back to get back to the truck. That sound just isn’t right when you hear it in person. Makes one want to curl up in the corner and start sucking your thumb……..
