We’ve tried the led bobbers and the glow sticks were much brighter. If your engineering skills are par to making your own, LED’s are super cheap at Radio Shack. I make my own LEDS for tip ups. Its just getting them to be water proof
Yep, glow sticks. Bread bag ties. And I put reflective tape along the front of the board and on the flag. Works perfect.
My engineering skills are slightly above average, but i believe i can handle this.
I have large, 3′ boards, so i was thinking of a AA based rotating LED trouble lite type of thing. I have seen them on runners arm bands.
I can fall back to glow sticks, but setting up with those will require being near a KMart, etc, so i was hoping to find something in a battery.
Didn’t need these on Michigan much as the protocol was already wide bearth, but at the top of P4, i’ll have guys cutting right over my lines in the middle of the nite, i suspect… (it’s really ugly when the 300# mono gets wrapped in their prop… )
Trolling boards in tight quarters is asking for trouble and one could argue inconsiderate. I’ve seen it a 100 times on Mille Lacs in the fall. It’s hard enough watching for other boats let alone boards.
Lived with the issue on Michigan all the time. In TIGHT QUARTERS i wouldn’t even THINK of setting boards.
But, hypothetically, my boat is alone, it’s 3:30am and the fish are feeding suspended and boat shy. Perfect situation of boards and DRs.
You have a large area of the river and you are not even CLOSE to the main channel. You’re plugging along at .8 to 1.3mph, when…
some guy on plane WOT cuts 25′ away from you.
I’ve got flags and reflector tape on all of my boards and a hail call protocol on my UHF AND a 2 mcp blinking flood,
and I’ve still seen people cut between me and the board, no matter what size my boat (happened in a 34′, many times in my 23′ and even during day lite on my 16’er; i like cheap old boats, kinda like me, my ex says…)
So, i was thinking of adding a light weight flashing LED to help them come to consciousness a bit quicker. We keep a pair of side cutters taped to our mast to cut our draw line forthwith so our mast doesn’t get ripped out of our boat, but it’s still a 1/2 hour of down time resetting lines that i’d like to avoid if possible.
FWIW, I probably wouldn’t even consider setting boards above the vermillion, but there are a LOT of suspended fish feeding in that period from the vermillion down to the head of the lake and at 3am, it’s not too many guys going by.
my boards can be easily adjusted for width also, so they don’t HAVE to be out 100′ or 125’…
I would suggest putting some red and blue strobe lights on the bow of your boat. Usually when people see those things they go the other way. Try outside the box on this one.
Go to a bike store or look online for bike safety lights. They usually run on AAA or AA batteries, fairly small, waterproof, and most are EXTREMELY bright. Most also have a few lighting options like steady on, strobe, etc.
Several solutions online. Just google submersible LED lights.
My kids have pool lights that are ice cubes and there never has been a problem with failure due to leakage.
Check out LEDLIGHTS.COM. I purchased some LED flares form them for use on my salmon boards. Pricey but I have no problem seeing the boards.
picked up the LEDLIGHTS.com and am impressed. The ‘programable’ options are nice and the flash is amazing. Have also decided to use them for our ‘jug fishing’ bobbers when we are night fishing.
Now I’ve got to figure out how to mount it on the edge of a 3/4″ board!! There is a magnet in the bottom of the base that I might be able to remove, sub in fender washer and screw???
