I’m heading for Lac La Martre, NWT on June 26 – July 2 to fly-fish, mainly for huge pike. The lake’s famous for big pike (a tippet-class record was caught there) and Lakers (30+# possible…on a fly!!), and Grayling, too, and I get more and bigger pike on streamer flies than typical hardware casters. I’m looking for company (hardware casters are welcome, if they don’t mind getting out-fished by flyrods), and would be glad to teach anyone how to do it, and how to tie my favorite flies. There’s still room at the lodge, and the trip includes all meals, guides, and airfare into the lodge from Yellowknife. Cost, including 1 night hotel at Yellowknife (June 25), local taxes and probable tips should be about $4,000.

Contact me ([email protected]) if you’re interested. I make no money at this. Just looking for some fly-fishermen to share the fun.

Ill be out west during that time, otherwise it sounds awesome. I was up at Great Slave Lake (the river coming out) about 10 years ago and the pike fishing was unlike anything I have ever seen. The grayling was a nice bonus too.

After the first day my arms were more sore than any workout I have ever done and that was on regular equipment. I can’t imagine how awesome those 10-20 pound fish would be with a fly…good luck!

As an afterthought, I’ll send anyone who wants to join me in the NWT a free copy of my book, TOOTHY CRITTERS LOVE FLIES. Might even throw in a few of my favorite streamers. Blatent bribery to get some company. My usual fishing buddies are all commited for this year.

There are few places on this earth that after being there once, I feel compelled to go back but I have to admit the Northwest Territories is one.
I went to Point Lake (240m N of Yellowknife) back in 1992 to fish Lake Trout. It was an absolute blast! Every day, I caught multiple fish from 20 lbs to 31 lbs, often I had at least one of every weight, and several of every weights.

After we returned to Yellowknife, we went pike fishing. Nobody that lived there could understand why we wanted to target Pike. At the time, they fed pike to their dogs for food. We rented a truck and a boat from a local. He told us to drive up the road till there was water on both sides, and put in on the side that looked the most promising. We had rods and tackle, but no net. I hand landed way too many fish to count that day. My fishing partner hooked into a fish near a waterfalls that after chasing it around with the boat, finally it tired. When it surfaced beside the boat, it was a HUGE pike. It gazed up at me with a look in its eyes that said” Go ahead big boy, try to hand land me! I just stood there stunned in the boat and said, Nope, not me. About that time, it made a powerful run, and broke the line. I will never, ever forget that day..

I long to get back to the Northwest Territories, and this package seems like a pretty good deal, but I just cant swing it at this stage of my life. Hopefully someday.

I just thought I would throw my experience out there for anyone that has any interest in the Northwest Territories. It is the trip of a lifetime!
