Are you planning on carrying in MN too?
Take a MN class and apply for the MN permit (that’s good for you in MN but not WI since you’re a WI resident) Then take your MN class certificate to your sheriff and apply for your WI permit.
Make sense?
kinda, so I have to have a permit in each state I want to carry?
No I don’t think so. Some of the states accept permits from other states.

Short answer…Yes, that is correct.
Not really….. If the state you reside in has reciprocity with the state you intend to travel to you would not need two permits. I live in MN and have a MN permit and can carry in WI, just not the other way around because MN has not recognized WI’s permit yet.
There are reciprocity maps that will tell you which states recognize what permits. WI is still trying to figure out how they want there laws to read and other states have not decided weather or not to allow WI permits.

I gave Mike the short answer. He lives in WI and works in MN. He would need two permits.
I don’t know what MN requires for training, but in WI as long as you have your hunter’s safety, then you don’t need to go through any further classes… You just fill out the application on http://www.doj.state.wi.us/dles/cib/ConcealedCarry/application.asp
make a check or money order for $50, a copy of your hunters safety card (I made a copy of my DL and hunter’s safety on the same page and sent in..) and the three signatures on the application… I sent mine in on Nov 1 and got mine Nov 19th…
and Yes MN doesn’t currently recognize WI permits, so if you plan on carrying in MN you will need to get a MN permit also or wait until MN recognizes our permit.. I’m just waiting until MN catches up and recognizes WI’s permit..

It might be a long wait. MN requires training and a live fire test to apply for a permit. States are reluctant to recognize other states permits that require less training that their own. I would guess MN will not allow WI permit holders to carry in MN unless WI changes their requirements, but thats JMHO.
Hence the reason to take the MN class, get the MN permit and use the MN class certificate to get your WI residence permit.
(If you’re a person that lives along the MN/WI border or travel from WI to MN frequently.)
You need to be 21 in Minnesota and you need more training and another certificate. Every 5 years we need to go through the training and testing again.
I have a classmate in Wisconsin that has a range and offers classes. Check them out. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Oakleys-Shooting-Range/85234636414
Also
I was just saying, most people in WI have a hunter’s safety card that hunts (at least people born after 1979 as WI DNR requires it to purchase a hunting license) so they wouldn’t have to take an additional class to get their WI CC permit, and could get their app in the process with WI while they set their stuff up with MN to get a MN permit.. WI requires to be 21 also, and we do have to reapply every five years, but do not have to re-shoot or re-train, this may change as the law in WI has only been in effect for two months… I’m hoping MN does accept it, but can see why they wouldn’t.. I technically can carry in MN as I am still a certified LE officer in WI, but am not currently working for a dept (back injury) and don’t want to go through all the hoopla if I were to get stopped by a LE officer..
If I am reading the maps correctly, couldnt a WI resident get a Utah permit and be good in both MN and WI?
Thanks Jen.
I haven’t attended a WI class yet, but here’s a pm from an Ido member that did. BTW, this was an unsolicited pm.
TO BK:
Just qualified to apply for my WI CCW (Location edited out)never got a clear answer to the question- – – does MN recognize my CCW permit?? Do you know? thanks
To Ido Member:
No, MN does not recognize the WI permit.
How was the class in your opinion?
Member to BK:
Without being real specific, I paid $15 for the 4 hr course and I figure I broke even on the money spent. Add in the gas to get to EDIT and back- – I got took- -Couldn’t pin her down on anything. Some of the guys had great questions, she’d sidestep and her co-teacher would carry us in a different direction- – -They told us right up front- you WILL pass this course. . . .the only hands-on was to demonstrate that you could UNLOAD a handgun of your choice.
BK to Member:
Really? That’s it?
Member to BK:
These were both 25 yr law officers and also accredited instructors. A couple of the girls in the class did not have physical strength to load a magazine, rack and lock a slide or clear the load on a Glock but they still passed. I displayed on a revolver and the examiner never even looked at me while I was qualifying. Sat there BS’ing with a guy on his left.
****End****
Now keep in mind this was one persons view of one WI class.
I think it’s very important to know as much about preventing bad situations and getting out of bad situations as it is with dealing with bad situations and what to do after a bad situation has happened.
Take it for what it’s worth.
MN will recognize it and I am allowed to carry in MN, but have no “ID” recognizing me as a CLEO so they would have to call Training and Standard in WI to verify that I am certified… Just not worth the headache..
And I truly believe WI’s requirements for getting a cc permit is ridiculous, I took my hunter’s safety 12 years ago, granted I’ve been around firearms my entire life (shot my first 22 pistol when I was 3) and I know the laws regarding self defense due to LE training, and also had to pass a LE firearms class.. I’m guessing that WI will change their law to be stricter in their requirements in training and what the training includes… Most classes I’ve seen in the area are $100+ for 4 hours…
We’re on the same page…and hopefully we’ll see a Federal Carry permit and we won’t have to worry about all of this state by state bs.
I HAVE A DREAM! LOL!
Wow, now I’ve seen elephants fly!!
BK asking the feds to come in and oversee and regulate!!!
They need to be involved with the MN/WI border water rules too. The kids can’t get along.

If drivers licenses and marriages are valid in all 50 states and US territories, why aren’t carry permits?

One reason….Illinois.

Illinois has the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, so restrictive, in fact, only the criminals and politicians have them! And as we all know there is no shortage of either. I guess my comment may be the Grandmother of oxymoron’s related to redundancy!
My wife and I both have a MN CC permit. We both mailed our applications to WDOJ on November 1, 2011. She received her WI permit on November 25, 2011. I am still waiting for mine, I guess they may be concerned about an “EyeJacking” charge I was falsely accused of and subsequently cleared !
