I am lucky enough to be heading to Grand Cayman on Christmas day for a week. I’ll be staying on the East end of the island at the “Reef” resort. Has anyone had experience flats fishing for Bone-fish (or other species)around the island? If so, would you recommend a specific guide or flat to go wade around on. I’m bringing my 8 weight and spinning gear. My wife should let me fish as much as I’d like. She’ll be sipping cocktails with my sister-in-law and I’ll be off snorkeling and fishing…I want to catch my first Bone…so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Orange whip, I’ve flied for bones on Grand Caymen a few dozen times and they are there to be had. Not great numbers like the Bahamas or Mexico but if you play the right cards you will score. The east end where you are staying is very windy so a rental car is a must to set out on your own to the best locations that I have found on my trips. Get you a island map and look up the tide charts as you will need to focus your time on the water during a rising tide from the lowest point up as the bones move up shallow to feed then. Use VERY small flies #10’s in shrimps or charlies in brown, tan, olive, with a touch of pink. 12ft leader in 8lb should do ya and a 8wt is fine.I hired a guide the first time I went some 20+ years ago and dialed it in myself there after as they ain’t cheep but worth a nubie’s success. Target all along south sound from the boat landing start and s l o w l y wade east on that shallow flat to the light house is a 1/2 days walk. Just a little farther west 1 mi. is a small cove with a good turtle grass flat as well. On the north west is the huge north sound and Barkers that will fill a day as you can drive all the way to the end of the road at the NW corner of the island. On your end there will be too much wind and rock , so another day head to Rum Pt. and bring the wife. Drop her in a hammock by the bar and head off in the shallows for some flat’s rockets. I would not try the spinning gear as been there and done that, they are waaay to spooky in the shallows for a jig splashing anywhere on foot. Deeper water from a boat works better for that. As for guides, it’s been too long ago to remember mine but maybe book one for a 1/2 day and take it from there to set out on your own. Remember the rising tides and there will be fish on the flats.
Best of luck.
PM me if you would lick some more info on Caymen.December 20, 2011 at 3:24 pm #1019581Thanks for the advice…Indeed I’m hoping to get half a day with a guide early in the trip and then I’ll be trying it on my own. I’m looking forward to trying your advice!
December 20, 2011 at 3:30 pm #1019586I have caught dozens of them on a white jig, white hair, with a piece of conch.Fly fishing w smaller clauser minnows works pretty well.Look for cloudy water, it should be areas of feeding bones.Have a great time!
