This is the second year in a row that my deep cycle batteries have frozen in my boat. The dealer replaced them last year but i dont know that he will again. Why is this happening and is there anything i can do to rejuvinate them?

Sorry to hear of your misfortune !
Get a different brand of battery (Interstate)
I have had my 3 for 2 1/2 years now and still holding strong !
December 10, 2011 at 10:15 pm #1016539Hi Red I do not know what your set up is but do you have them on a maintenance style of charger that keeps them charged. It sounds like they are losing there charge and that is when they will freeze. I know for myself I bring them into my garage and I put them on charge once month to maintain the charge, however I do not have a small maintenanece or any charger on my boat, it also give me peice of mind. I do not know if this helps you any but I hope it may give you some ideas of what may be causing the problem for you. Good Luck.
December 10, 2011 at 10:23 pm #1016542If they are freezing, then they have been discharged to a low level. Install a cut off switch or find out what is discharging them while just sitting. My motor does it.
December 10, 2011 at 10:29 pm #1016544My discharge source was that little bit that it takes for the radio to remember your settings. I added a cut off swithch for that as well and my battery replacement problem was solved.
December 10, 2011 at 10:36 pm #1016548These are series 29 only hooked to trolling motor. They did have 4 hrs tops of low power runtime used thanksgiving day. So not fully charged but didnt think that shud have been enough of a draw to freeze since it hasnt been that bitterly cold. The last set lasted over five yrs with the same kind of care and treatment.
December 10, 2011 at 11:25 pm #1016551Disconnect the ground, wait til it gets dark and make slight contact to the post to see if it sparks. Sounds like you have a leak somewhere.
December 10, 2011 at 11:27 pm #1016552I keep my batteries in the boat all winter ,but I plug in my onboard charger all winter and no problems for 5 years now on the same battery set.
MarkTregoPosts: 2December 10, 2011 at 11:55 pm #1016556The batteries I buy from Auto Zone have given me the best service, they stay in year round. In the winter I charge them every couple weeks.

Welcome to IDO Mark Tr. Good advise, a charged battery will not freeze. The cold weather is hard on lead acid batteries but when not fully charged you are running the risk of one or more cells freezing. After the batteries are fully charged check the water in all of the cells, the water should come up to the screan at the bottom of the cover. If the water is low before you charge the battery you can add water but you only want to cover the plates, remember if you do you are still running the risk of the water boiling over so you’ll want to check the water level every 30-60 minutes. You can remove excess water with a syringe and a short piece of hose.
December 11, 2011 at 3:07 am #1016598You have to have a drain someplace leaving your trolling motor plugged in a depth finder GPS antennae Lowrance not getting turned off? Something has to be puling power off those batteries.
Leaving them discharged for any length of time is really hard on lead acid batteries. Should be recharged as soon as possible after use.
Edited to add Are you sure your charger is working correctly?
December 11, 2011 at 3:59 am #1016607I keep my promariner charger hooked up ALL the time, it keeps my batteries always on charge so they will never freeze. Ive had the same batteries for 3 years. Just from my own experience

Going on 7yrs on both starting and trolling batteries. Tried to buy new ones but both still test good. They are AC Delco Voyager batteries.December 11, 2011 at 1:41 pm #1016643I used to leave batteries in boat but bring them into basement for winter now.
