Leech lake netting and Wanton Waste with PICS

I generally don’t get involved but when Brett posted this to my Facebook page I found myself more than concern…

Just food for thought: Although we have been hearing a great deal in regards to a new football stadium in the recent months, it’s been going on in the state house for a VERY LONG time. Now, there is serious talk of measures to help insure the stadium be built in the toughest economic times most of us have seen in a long time. That said, is this SLAUGHTER part of a bigger picture? Are we reloading issues of the past 15 years concerning native tribal rights to have gaming (where no white man can) at putting at risk even more harm to our resources as a result. The problem today is we don’t have legislators today for the most part that even care about our natural resources. They (for the most part) don’t gain any political clout by endorsing for instance sport fishing, they would rather garner the attention they receive by protecting a minorities interest, in this case some natives. There is a LOT more here than just some dead fish. AND, I WILL TELL YOU, IF YOU KNOW ME I DON’T APPRECIATE DEAD ANYTHING, MUCH LESS FISH. I’m not afraid to speak my mind and at times maybe I shouldn’t but is this case who can hold back?

I want to commend WCCO for at least starting to cover this issue. When and if it comes full circle and the rights of the natives are discussed in terms of a new stadium, I hope their still onboard.

Years ago I had three camera crews on sight at the Deer Lake massacre when natives with harpoons, boats and headlamps speared the crap out of Deer Lake, we took the footage to the local networks (broadcast footage, shot on broadcast cameras) and NOT one second of it ever aired on those networks. Looking back, I soon realized how much advertising was committed to those same networks in the form of casino advertising. Follow the money…

Please forgive me for this rant and rave but I, like many others have had enough. We need a stadium for a team, we need our natural resources for the tax paying, license buying sportsman and an end to the modern day injustice thrust upon all of us by a few select, that we elect.

Sorry again… have a great day, a MERRY CHRISTMAS and pick up your phones and thank WCCO.

Good job on the interview with WCCO. I would be too pissed and probably drop the F-bomb a few times!

Keep us updated on the story.

Just curious, if it turns out to be one of the indians, you figure the tribal warden will actually do anything?

    Al

I want to make this clear no one knows who dumped the fish could of been a native a whiteman but it was dumped on the reservation.

Alot of honkys net fish on Leech

Yes they do and if you noticed I said IF, I also know what the DNR would do, I don’t know what the indians would do so I asked.

So before you get to wound up, read the entire post huh?

My post was a commentary on the fact we should keep our eye on the ball, in this case the money ball. If anyone thinks for a minute that there will be NO REPERCUSSIONS as a result of Racinos due to a new stadium, then we have NO IDEA how bad the natives wish to retain their monopoly on gaming in this state, not to mention using our natural resources as a pawn. Not looking for argument, that’s why I seldom post. But this is a very important one to stay focused on. If it’s a rouge just being a rouge, then the tribe will settle it and it’s done, if it’s the start of something else we need it on our radar. Just a commentary….

Bob is correct here. Following the money is the key. I’m very interested i how this works out.

Now that there is some media attention, I think that Bob Auel is safe, but that was a serious consideration in the first couple of days after BobA shot the pictures and opened communication with the tribe.

Now that WCCO has opened the book, it is a political issue that won’t go away easy and irritating the tribes further (than setting up Racinos) can have indeterminate effects.

But, with a violation of principle this egregious, the gauntlet had to be thrown down…

    Hi Mike,

I’m sure your thanking Bob Auel for his contribution and not me. But just in case I don’t want to think I didn’t see and appreciate your comment. This is one to keep our eye on. But like Brian and I were discussing this morning…We’re really not to sure of all the facts yet. Let’s just hope the FACTS are discovered…and brought to the public.

For the record again when I found the site I didnt see who did it. It could of been a whiteman, native, or anyone so we just can’t assume because its on the Rez its a Native and start pointing fingers.

The focus has to be on the Wanton waste maybe in the end we know who did it.

I spoke to The tribal warden yesterday I gave him the GPS cor. to the site and hes heading out to look. When he has some info he will give me a call. When I know more Ill post it. I want to keep in contact with them so I know their serious and I get a follow up call.

Having been on Leech Lake for over 60 years I have heard all sorts of “netting” stories, by Natives and Whites. This however really takes the prize. I have helped stock Walleye fry for the last 3 years and to see these pictures really ticks me off. I doubt if they will find the culprits without someone turning them in. If it is Natives the good news for them is that the President announced yesterday that he “has their backs.”

Those of you that are concerned about this I have an update.

Just got off the phone with our DNR Warden he found the site and stated someone else has been to the site by the tracks in the snow.

He said he counted around 50 fish but the site has wolf and or bear tracks of animals eating on the pile.

He also said they have a person of interest and a lead about who dumped this. Both Wardens are working on it and he said its on reservation land, if it is the Tribal Govt takes the lead . He stated they will send him a report.

I asked if he had a name and he said yes a person of interest. Because it’s under investigation thats all he could say.

Doug smith from the Star Trib sent me an email yesterday about this story he may give me a call.

Since the pile was initially covered there most likely was the intent to try and hide the dead fish, I bet that guy wished the wolves, bears and other critters were a bit faster. Just makes me ill thinking about how long this could have been going on. Thanks for the persistance, to walk a mile in Steve F’s shoes takes more than balls.

    Update,
I recevied this email from a friend today. Interesting

    Bob,

I just got off the phone with the same CO that is investigating your info on the dumping.

We had a very detailed and informative chat!!

From what the CO said …..”We will see something huge on all of this in the near future”.

I haven’t called this CO from the Mn DNR since my last call ill let him work on it then call him for more info.

Last night I fished on leech and talking to the local guy I was with he said all our Wardens in Walker know about this. The Warden he talked to said nothing will happen. I hope he’s wrong and my efforts to expose this and find the people and end this waste and end netting for ever.

Bingo whynot thank you thats it. My report about the wanton waste just helped that along. And Little blurp is correct about the black market walleyes. Politically correct is it the elected officals dont want to say anything about netting or equal rights.

When my story aired on Wcco TV news it became a BIG BLURP and it moved the Feds and the Wardens to get this stopped. NO nets anywhere. Once it hits national outlets and news the Feds knew they better act.

My timing on this was perfect to get the ball rolling at the Federal Level of the Gov. Because the FBI was in the Walker area this summer on Leech doing the sting and they saw my story on Wcco on Leech lake Wonton Waste and now they cant drop the BALL. I also told the Mn DNR wardens of the story on Wcco so they knew they had to follow up on my info.

Im really glad something now will be done to protect everyone’s resource.

I removed my Guote by Steve to read.

My quote referenced here– “we got’em” relates to the Federal and State Gov./courts etc. This has never been a direct fight with the Native Americans as our mission statement has conveyed from the start–and still does as it reflects our goal.

You will hear big news on this soon. Check the above link to get the info on that story in July. whynot posted this on another site.

Sorry for any confusion about my original post and anything that may be misleading not my intent. I need to go fishing

    Thanks

Not to take away from the story…but I have a comment.

“We gottem now” That statement is really really sad when we think about “who” we got and the way this had to go down.

The “we” is suppose to be “US”!

What am I missing regarding the Link to WCCO? The link takes me to an Outdoor News article that was written in July. Not really breaking news.

    Bob,
I commend you for your efforts but am very skeptical anything of importance will be done.

For clarity… Steve’s reference of “we got em” is the Federal Government/ Courts and their obvious discrimination against a race.

Saw that too, but if you look on the right side it is talking about ice fishing and two stories there, so if you ice fish in July, then the story is old, this is new news. Thanks for all you are doing to patrol our resources.

    BK-
I sympathized with your concern, but anyone who is selling filets around the law,is not “US” in my opinion.

It’s hard enuf getting fishable populations without someone stealing from “US” for a couple of nickels…

and it only took the feds a decade to find the poachers…

“G” is correct. My quote referenced here– “we got’em” relates to the Federal and State Gov./courts etc. This has never been a direct fight with the Native Americans as our mission statement has conveyed from the start–and still does as it reflects our goal.

Our fight is NOT with American Indians. It is with the U.S. Government.

In the short term, our intent is to put an end to exclusive rights that the U.S. Government allows Native Americans to exercise at Lake Mille Lacs, Minnesota and, ultimately, all over the entire nation. Our effort is based on the fact that all United States citizens are born equal, no matter of skin color nor ethnic origin and that all should enjoy their citizenry and natural resources equally.

In the long term, nationwide, our mission is to expose the flaws and failures within exclusive U.S. Native American Sovereignty. We want to force the U.S. Government into creating a new, modern day solution to Native American issues and by doing so, create better lives for Native Americans. We feel the exclusiveness allowed Native Americans within the U.S. has failed them and is, ultimately, out of control. Our mission is to force the U.S. Government into bringing ALL U.S. citizens together as equal citizens, based on ethnic origin and skin color–NOT excluding Native Americans. Our mission is to see Native Americans living within the SAME rules and regulations, without exception, as ALL U.S. citizens, nationwide, are mandated by the Constitution of the United States. So in the end, ALL of us, simply, get along without alienating anyone, no matter their ethnic origin or skin color.

Ok, The reason I shared the link in the July story was for people who missed the story. The sting happened this summer here in the Walker Area. I didnt read the story until today so I thought I would share it.

Then I followed that with the WCCO story. Which is my story about Wanton waste I found a week ago which I think will help the Feds in their case and the tribe as they move along.

Ok whats new and is news is that something is going to happen soon about the netting of fish and the sale of Walleyes from the Leech lake area and red lake and the Wanton Waste. Someone is going to be charged from what I hear.

Iv been trying to update what I know from our local DNR and others. Its alot of work Im a bit tired talking to alot of people and then spend alot of time on these forums.

I need an information officer to proof read for me.

If someone wants to take over this Im all for it. Just send me a PM Ill give you the contacts. I think Im done for awhile.

Way Tooooo much work. I think justice will be done soon and thats Ill I hoped for and just maybe no more Nets.

    Thanks
    Bob Auel
