I don’t fish up there but this makes me whoever is responsible needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and I would hope that would include jail time. What a waste, makes me sick. There are not words I can type to express what I really feel. I hope they are caught soon before they do more
    damage.

Its ironic that I just got home from the PERM banquet and this is the first post I read. They had many good speakers talking about this very subject. I think we all need to support Steve Fellegy’s efforts as well as get these Racinos up and running.

It’s a sad picture…and the sadest part is the tribes have the money too pay others to look the other way.

I think the donations to Steve Fellegy for his court case needs to be kicked up a notch.

Just curious, if it turns out to be one of the indians, you figure the tribal warden will actually do anything?

My first call to the Tribal Warden he told me thats wanton waste and wanted to look at it. I have a call in now to give
him the directions to the dump site.

Leech lake Law and fines state Wanton Waste $300.00 fine well see after he calls.

I want to make this clear no one knows who dumped the fish could of been a native a whiteman but it was dumped on the reservation.

I think we can also say that whoever did this should be caught and prosecuted.

Media attention will help to ensure that this is taken to the fullest extent of the law.

I DO think that we need to be prepared to have this fall flat on its face. Most of these cases are broken by bar talk and it’s quite possible that the bar talk will be very limited in this case…

What Bob is doing is to be respected and supported. It’s courageous, if you’ve ever lived in a smaller community.

Bob just wondering if you heard this from the guy with two first names? Or if there are more dumping areas?

    Bob,

Thanks for following up with this and talking to the correct people. It is very disrespectful to the resource and to sportsmen in general (native or non). I also think it should be noted again that this could just as easily be a Native American or someone else and this should be kept in mind until the evidence proves otherwise.

It does not do any good to begin bashing Native Americans without proof of the wrongdoer. I don’t like the netting any more than the rest of you, but we are taught innocent until proven guilty.

That’s a fair statement, but it isn’t like this site is kind to pale-faced poachers either. Although I am guessing there is some added angst knowing that most likely this was the result of netting.

Shot no. Only one name I dont know his last name and I dont need it. Hes local and doesnt want any damage like a fire at his property. He did tell me he’s seen other nets frozen in the ice with live walleyes still swimming and its been going on for three years.

I am pizzed about the poaching aspect as well, but I don’t condone putting down an entire group of people because of it. It makes us all look stupid, racist, and poor sportsmen to make radical assumptions about the person or persons involved.

Whoever it is, I hope the get everything they have coming to them and more.

Just an update about this waste. Talked to the Tribal Warden as I type he’s headed out to the dump site.

WCCO TV called me today and will doing a story on this soon maybe at 10pm tonight. Talked to a reporter today who taped my report to air.

Thanks Bob. I knew Jamie would step up and do this. I’m just glad we were able to get this into the proper hands in the press.

Exactly. I mean we get pissed at poachers, not just because they poach, but they also make the rest of us look bad.

Jim,I talked to another reporter Jamie had a story going. I sent them my post with pics and they called me.

Update, if you watched wcco news at 6pm on tv they had my report about the netting at the top of the news report first story. I thank James at wcco for airing this story and getting the word out about netting. It was their lead story you should be able to watch it at 10Pm if you missed it.

Great Job Bob, not everyone would do what you have done. As fellow sportsman I thank you for doing what was right . Lets hope they catch whoever is responsible now.

Thank you Bob for bringing this to light. I hope whoever has such a low regard for OUR, and I include everyone; resources gets what ever punishment the law can dish out. For shame!

Whenever I see threads like this I always think of this poster. The irony is I’ve never seen more filth or simply disregard for nature than I have on a reservation. To be fair most reservations in MN are actively trying to give the appearance of caring for the environment by cleaning up. At least in the high visibility areas.

I’ve seen some places back in the woods on The Omaha Reservation and Winnebago Reservations that would make you think that you’ve stumbled into a dump.

It seems that the roles have shifted and it’s the Non-Native Sportsman that are truly the stewards of the earth.

Under Tribal Law, Wanton Waste carries a stiff penalty, including a $100 fine and then another $20 for each dead fish.

For this kind of offense I think the penalty should be a wee bit stiffer
