Now if only you could just advertise for an ice fishing derby with a poster at the sporting goods desk.

FWIW…The Salvation Army is one of the charities that don’t have CEO drawing a big paycheck…most of the monies go to the needy.

G, Mills Fleet announced a couple days ago that they were no longer going to allow a bell ringer for the Salvation Arm in front of any of their stores this year. Mills was just going to write a company check to them.

They have reversed the decision, and will continue to allow Salvation Army bell ringers in front of their stores.

Hopefully they will still feel inclined to write a check.

85% of funds collected go to help people in need.

That’s what I question ??? The story reads that Mills did write a check and that it wasn’t even close to what they took in.. and they talk about Fargo… I swear they were in front of Mills in WP black friday ????

Heres a story about the Salvation Army that goes a ways back and the way they were then in the 1950’s. My mother told me that when my uncle Junior came back from Korea and was all shot up, and he was in the university hospital from wounds, that the only charity that would give him socks was the Salvation Army. He needed socks and every charity wanted money for them, even the Veterans organisations. The Salvation Army has always had a special place with me and every time I walk by thier kettle I put money in it to help the ones in need.

They have a food kitchen in town here and at meal time they have a big turn out for breakfast, lunch and dinner, helping the less fortunate, they are presently feeding alot of people every day. I don’t know of any charity that has helped more people then the Salvation Army, I know here in town they will and do help anyone they can. If there was a national award for the charity that helps the most my vote would be for the Salvation Army. I do know alot of organizations and individuals here in town donate to thier cause. Put a little in thier kettle if you can because it all adds up and helps.

I never drop anything in on the way into the store. If the ringer locks eyes on me to try and guilt me into giving he or she gets nothing. If they keep ringing the bell and say thank you to those who drop something in I will donate on the way out.

Some of these people (mostly at the gas stations) seeking donations make you feel like dirt if you don’t donate something. I don’t appreciate them asking when I’m paying for their overpriced gas and soda. If I want to donate to their charity I will certainly find them. We donate well in excess of $1,000 a year to various charities plus all the high school kids and church kids who are selling something.

    Merry Christmas everybody!!

Actually SA is the only charity i donate too. I have a rule: if i pass a can, i put every $1 bill i’ve got int he can and all my pocket change. They do an exceptional job…

With that principal, you’d think they’d start putting them out in front of strip clubs…

I may be an oddball here, but I absolutely HATE walking into stores this time of year due to the bell ringers. They try to guilt you into dropping money in the can. If I want to donate money or items to whatever cause, I will do so at my convenience.

I agree with most on this post that the Salvation Army is a great charity. I have several family members and friends that have volenteered as bell ringers. I don’t think a charity like the Salvation Army should be paying people to ring the bells. You’d think in today’s economy, it wouldn’t be hard to find bell ringers.

FF was not allowing the ringers in Rochester until a couple of days ago, so it is not just a Fargo deal…I’m assuming it was company wide. Locally it is the #1 collection kettle, so it will help. I’ve been a ringer for years and do it more hours since retiring. Have my own tradition each year of ringing on Christmas Eve morning at FF and it is a lot of fun because everyone is in such a great mood.
