OK Red Wing has a reputation that is justly deserved.

But, is it BETTER than Alma or just FISHED MORE because it’s convenient to the TC and has a hot water plant upstream???

    Comments on both sides please…

I personally fish below Alma as soon as the ice goes out in the spring. I have fished there for 10-12 years and feel comfortable finding fish and navigating the water plus i know the owner of the Alma bait shop who tries to help put me on fish. I think it is personal preference myself. I’ve seen alot of big eyes come out of Alma and heard alot of big fish up by Red Wing. Alma tends to have less traffic but thats just my opinion.

Couple years ago there was a guy named Jared I think…who was posting pig after pig coming from Alma in the spring. That guy had em dialed in…

Never even fished Alma but will get there some day.

Depends what time of year and what you’re after. If you want jumbo Eyes they both are good. If you want to catch 10-20 Saugers over 17 inches long in a day then there’s noplace better than p4. Pepin offers a ton of trolling options, and rock pitching options. Alma is better for wing dams (unless you fish 4 below the lake).
For me, either is a haul so I tend to lean towards p4 for the chance at a true 6lb Sauger or 13lb eye. I do plan on more time at Alma this spring though.

I like Alma better and the biggest reason is it seems to have way less traffic, at least when I have been there.

Caught some dandy eyes there. My pb of 11.5 came from Alma.

well i just feel like there are less areas ideal for eyes staging, takes less time to check them out. and it is pressured way less, even fishing right at the damn can be great the will only seee jigs from 5 to ten boats instead of 100 in a day.

Not to sideline the thread… is the primary access to Alma the boat landing by the power plant? Saw it on google maps.

Both pools are outstanding. Pool 4 has more shad and a shorter fish will weigh more and grow faster. Personally I have caught more fish over 28 inches in Alma or south of there. Less pressure in Alma is a factor.
    Happy hunting!

These two clowns never did get them dialed in on P-4.

Cycle Guy, I can answer that question for you , down river below the Alma power plant is what’s known as the Belvidere Slough it’s usually free of ice earlier in the spring because the warm water discharge from the power plant tends to run down river and through that slough.I believe it’s off Hwy 35 & OO as you would go toward Buffalo City only when crossing the tracks you bear left, then there is a marina just north of the launch it’s set back by some high pines… Hope this helps….”Hairjig”

Jason that was Jarred Flukigger, I’m close on his last name. We hired him as a guide and fished below the dam at Alma and had a blast. Lots of smaller fish and some nicer ones jigging hair tipped with a minnow right below the dam. I brought up a 48 qt. Igloo cooler full of minnows, probably 50 to 75 dozen and we used them all between the four of us in one day, except a couple dozen we gave to Jarred when we left the boat ramp that night. We caught alot of smaller ones with a few nice saugers from 2 too 3 pounds and a few walleyes, plenty for the frying pan and too take some home too. Jarred did say he’s caught alot of nicer walleyes and I know he did, some very very nice smallies too. His old man was going to set up the bait shop there in Alama and I think he did do it a little while later. I don’t know if he still owns it or not but hes the guy to talk too, to ask where the bite is. His old man guided too and his client that day caught a 4 pound brown next to the lock about mid day. Jarred still might guide, I don’t know.
