Good luck and enjoy. Watch your face and anything else in the way. DO NOT let that crowbar slip. It’s a tooth breaker.

Had to replace my springs last year after one broke and i couldn’t get the door up. The best thing was to watch a YouTube video and explained exactly how to do it. Had to watch couple videos until I found video which explained it best. Tools were a vice grip, crescent wrench or open end, and two 3/8 solid rods 24″ long. Took about an hour an I was done . Be careful

If you were close to me I would help you out. I did it by myself and the biggest thing is to take your time and use the right tools for the job. You want solid steel bars that fit well in the holes so they don’t slip out. If they do run like hell if you still can!

If I’m remembering right it should be 7 to 7 1/2 full turns.

generally, one turn for every foot the door is tall. That works if you have the standard 13″ diameter drums.

Residential usually 7 or 8′ tall.

Enough turns to take the weight of the door. Spring sizes are pretty specific to the height of the door and the total weight. Also rated by number of cycles. Some installers use cheaper springs with limited cycles. Then you replace them when they break a few years down the line. Lots of good info here.

Those are very strong springs and they don’t care one lick about what they destroy, including your face, car, dog, etc.

Hire a professional to do it.

I was going to comment last week. I have worked on mine and its very dangerous. I would only hire it unless I had an emergency.

This thread was timely, I broke a spring a little after you posted, I watched some You tube videos and read some instructions, borrowed some bars so I had the proper tools, and I didn’t have a problem, took it slow paid attention to the job, wore my safety glasses, and it was uneventful, I can see how it’s a little scary, but I didn’t feel unsafe at any point. replaced both in a little over an hour or so.
