I’ve got a 99’ NBS Silverado sitting dead in the driveway that needs a new fuel pump. I recently helped Dad replace the pump in his Dodge Durango, so it’s not completely foreign to me; however I’m looking for any tips from guys that have done it before.

Some people say drop the tank, some say take the bed off – thoughts? Currently I’ve got roughly 18gal of fuel in the tank.

Just looking for any tips before I start on it.

    Thanks,
    Pete

One person, drop the tank with a jack, two person, take the bed off.

Rap on it a few times with a wrench until it starts working again. Worked for me late one night sitting at the boat ramp.

    What Mike said………
Rap on it while a 2nd person is cranking engine over.

2 hour job the 1st time you do it.
Use a floor jack to drop the tank.

i did mine last winter (2003 silverado), only had about 5 gallons of fuel in it though, and i dropped the tank. took a couple of hours.

make sure to replace your fuel filter while you’re under there too.

2X on repalcing the fuel filter!! That way you don’t have to do it again in 2 weeks.(been there, done that) This place had the best price for me. Also a junk yard dealer. http://sppautoparts.com/contact.php

    Hi,
I replaced my fuel pump (99′ Silverado) last summer. The parts guy talked me into raising the truck box because anytime you touch the tank straps your likely to go backwards. The fuel filler side is where the fuel tank is located (on frame rail). I took the truck box bolts (plus tank filler ground strap) off the fuel filler side and loosened the bolts on the other side of the box. I believe six bolts total – three on each side of the box. The truck box will look like a grand piano top when box is raised (the three very loose bolts keeps the box from “taking off”). If you lift high enough there is an electric connector you will have to undo by the license plate. I used two floor jacks (plus different lenghts of woow blocking) to “walk up the box” to get enough clearance to get on top of the fuel tank (and to get the fuel pump out/in). The ring that holds the fuel pump to the tank will be your biggest headache (have a BIG hammer handy).

PS. Look around YouTube and you will find some videos on this project. Buy the best pump available (Delphi?) because pumps last about 100K – 125K miles.

Have fun and good luck .

PULL THE BED!! Happened last year, almost to this day. So much easier.

Drop the tank. And more importantly get a Delhpi or OEM fuel pump. If you skimp on the pump you WILL be doing it again shortly!

Most auto parts stores carry AC Delco pumps now,If I was doing the job thats what I would be installing and NOTHING ELSE !!!

Remove drive shaft from rear end and hang off to passenger side(rubber strap)do NOT remove it from trans case/transmission,it gives you more room while doing the job on the ground.

Lower the tank carefully, remove filler hose from tank ,not from filler spout!Be careful not break lose the smaller holler inside the bigger fill hose up by the fill spout, find a way to siphon atleast 1/2 the gas out, then continue removing the tank.

You need any over the phone support Pete just call me.

    Thanks for the replies, Guys.

My truck is at 168,000 miles. First fuel pump for me but I purchased the truck with a little over 100k on it 5yrs ago. Not sure if it’s the first time to go or not.
