I’m wondering what the effects will or could be on Bass, as the Asian Carp work there way North up the river systems. We likley have one of the best Sm Bass fisheries in Mississippi Pools 11 and above all the way to Itasca State park, the headwaters.

Im assuming to expect a bottom up effect on the trophic system, as plankton and other microorganisms will be the first to go. It be a gradual change over an amount of time.

Man is good at killing things. I’m guessing since we got the Asian Carp here we will figure out a way to kill them all. Only question is will we get them all killed before the river systems are destroyed and how far-reaching will the destruction be.

I’m reading that they eat 40% of their weight each day. Wow!

They actually compete with gizzard shad and young-of-the-year fish. I saw my first skinny shad on the IL river shortly after they came through in 2000.

If I was a betting man, I would bet they won’t ever get too thick around here because from Keokuk north, we really are a series of reserviors, not a free flowing river. Their reproduction strategies don’t seem to link up this that type of water. When the 3-gorges dam was finished in China, it wiped them out over there. The IL river is a long, free flowing river compared to the Upper Miss.

They’re here already, just not reproducing.

    Just my 2 cents.

This would be outstanding. However, there are still “reservoir” pools all the way down to St. Louis and they’re thick in that part of the Mississippi, aren’t they?

Yep, all the way to L%D 26. The completion of that dam in China didn’t hurt the asian carp. Pollution is though. So much so, that what fish are left, the people refuse to eat them if they can help it because of the contamination. That’s the reason they are buying fish from the U.S. to the tune of 100’s of thousands of pounds.

Since they are buying 100’s of thousands of pounds of fish from us will they take back these asian carp? Maybe someone or a few someones could start netting them and make some money off those da– things and reduce the populations cause I am sure they are here to stay now

Sorry, I should have stated it’s the asian carp we are shipping to china.
And yes, they are here to stay.
