If you had $700 to spend on a Desktop PC (tower/keyboard only, no monitor, got one) to use at your job, what would you get ? I got the green light today to replace the ‘puter I have been using for about 10 years at work…all opinions valued and appreciated. (more than likely BEST BUY or Office Depot)

Will be running mostly our Dealership Mgt System, want MS Office and most other apps are on-line. The biggest issue I have is, there are 3rd party vendors, that extract data from our store, through my computer. I have about 3-4 different ones, logging in, mostly after hours, so mine is left on 24hrs 7days. Lately, I get bogged down pretty easily. My plan is to just set my old compter up in the IT closet and let them extract from it Thanks for all the input so far

    G,

Get Name Brand, HP, Dell are about all that is left in the desktop world.

    Windows 7 64 bit Professional
    Core i7 or i5 processor
    8 GB Ram or more
2 500 GB drives mirrored raid Larger if price permits
    CD/DVD Player/Burner

You might consider running dual monitors so that you can have an app open on each screen. We run dual monitors here at work and if I tried to take the second monitor away from my users, I would get my hands cut off. Running two 19″ or 20″ standard 4:3 monitors works great. The newer 16:9 monitors are alright but in my opinion you need a 22″.

If you are leaving that PC on 24X7 365 it should be in a cool area especially in the summer time when it can get really hot on long holiday weekends.

If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

G – I just bought a new puter last night at Best Buy. I was stuck between two models. HP H8-1114 at just over $700 and a Gateway with almost the exact same specs at $550. After dissecting the differences, the major cost difference is in the video graphics. The HP has the Nivia (sp??) G-force graphics that the hard core gamers want. The Gateway had the Intel video graphics which is more than enough for HD videos and moderate gaming. Now the fun part, migrating everything over to the new pc today…
