Been thinking about getting rid of the house phone for years now. Finally did it today. Heard on the news last night that it is 365 days until the next big election. We were getting at least 1 call every day for the last several month. Then the monthly call about wanting to lower our credit card interest rate. (never carry a balance) Think the topper was when the wife wouldn’t renew a magazine subscription and the girls said, ” Well you are one dumb [censored]”. She asked to talk to her supervisor and the girl laughed and said” Good luck with that”.

Yep, going to be a year of hell listening to all the liars on all sides. Sometimes wish I could just go off the grid.

We didn’t have caller ID. She emailed the magazine but never heard back. I’m sure the calls come from phone banks that are hired to do that. I was working outside at the time and can still see the look on her face when she came out to tell me what had happened. Looked just like this.

Are you guys just going to be using your cell phones as your new home line?

We are thinking about dumping ours too.

Yup…..each have a cell phone. Was at the doctor today and told them that our home phone # was no longer good and gave them my cell. Just havn’t decided what to do at night. Most of the time I turn my cell off and charge it. Now that I am retired I don’t get calls from work but we do have kids and grand kids that would call in an emergency. Also have aging parents.

We have our internet with our cable TV so that was not a problem.

We replaced our land line a couple years ago. We actually transferred the same number to a new cell phone that generally stays at the house. Occasionally we take it with us when we head out of town for a couple days as well. Plus when we went to a cell phone even though the number stayed the same, most telemarketing calls stopped. Make sure you sign up your number on the do not call list. Of course political parties are exempt from this list.

    Just my 2 cents.

Dropped the land line 2+ years ago. Never looked back! Our home security system has a cell phone built in. Even more secure than a phone wire for the crooks to cut.

We have been thinking of dumping the land line for the last several years and the only thing holding me back is I have had that phone number for 30 years. Still everyone pretty much calls me on my cell only telemarketers call the home so it is good to hear no one regrets dumping the land line.

I would love to get rid of my land line also but my dsl is tied to it along with the fax machine and I have satellite instead of cable. Anybody have any ideas? No I won’t switch to cable.

Got rid of my land line about 2 weeks ago. House sure is more quiet. Should have got rid of it years ago.

I’m about to join the cell phone world as well, I’m in the process of porting my home number into the new cell I bought. Hopefully the transaction will be done by the time I come home from work today, it was somewaht of a pain to get “Ted” from ghana to understand what I wanted to do.

We went without a landline for years and now have one again for two reasons.

#1) I don’t like giving my cell phone out to everyone like doctors offices, auto shops, etc.

#2) It gives me some peace of mind for safety/emergencies. With a budding family, I’d like a phone at home other than the wife’s and my cells for 911 calls.

To each his own, though. It’s definitely possible and a little cheaper to go cell-only.

I have to agree with Ralph. We have a land line so if there is a problem at home, the kids have a phone to call out, and if there is a babysitter in case of emergency.

The emergency/911 thing is what kept us from switching for a long time. Don’t have kids here anymore but it would probably be a good idea to leave the cell on and on the charger in the bedroom at night just in case of fire etc. Waiting for a phone to turn on and get to where you can use it would seem like forever if you needed it in an emergency.

You can get DSL without a phone line, don’t let them tell you that you have to have it, it’s BS. Dumped or landline a few months back, it is a pain having to change the number in all the places that have it but over time it gets done. Just make sure you remember your old number until it is no longer needed.

The only thing you need a land line for Satellite is to order on demand stuff.

You can dial 911 from any cell phone. Even inactive ones or your old ones. I know people that travel that keep their old phone and charger in the car just for that reason. They keep another at home where it is handy. When we disconnected my parents home number, we found out they had been paying to rent the phone since 1962. Had not had the phone since the 70’s.

you can dial 911 from any cell phone, but it is not a very accurate way for dispatch to determine location. A cell phone will bounce off a tower that may be close or far depending on how busy things are at the time. With a land line, they immediately have a address.

We have a package deal for cable/internet/cell phone. We have a cell for each of us – 2 adults and two children – plus one “home base” that stays in a cradle on the desk always charged….in theory. Sometimes it’s on the coffee table, sometimes it’s in the couch…

That’s the number we give out.

You’d think that with everyone in our family having their own phone..and one on the desk…That I could get ahold of someone when I want to,wouldn’t ya think?

The kids usually have the ringer off and want me to text them….My fingers are too big and my memory too small to do the texting thing….My wife has a work cellphone and a personal one. They’re both in her purse – that’s why couldn’t get ahold of her: Her purse was in the car.

The one on the desk is either misplaced or no-one answered it because…???…

I’m gettin’ madder every time I make 4 or 5 calls and every one goes to voicemail.

We haven’t had a land line at home for 5 years because we have good cell signals throughout the house. The cabin on the other hand…kept a land line there because the cell signal is sporadic (have had many friends with different carriers check and none are consistent).

We even dropped our cable internet at both places and tether off the phone. Sprint is the only remaining carrier that I know of that has a true unlimited data plan. Works for us.
